A failed CT scan has forced UFC welterweight Thiago Alves out of a UFC 111 pay-per-view main-card bout with Jon Fitch.
The report comes from Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, citing UFC president Dana White. New Jersey State Athletic Control Board representative Nick Lembo could not immediately be reached by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) for comment.
A source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com Alves has been scratched from Saturday's card and confirmed the failed CT scan.
UFC 111 takes place March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and Alves vs. Fitch -- a rematch from their initial meeting in 2007 -- was one of five bouts featured on the night's pay-per-view main card.
The UFC has not officially announced the change, and it's not known if a replacement will be sought or if the fight will be scrapped and the lineup altered.
Alves (16-6 MMA, 9-3 UFC) and Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC), who had both previously suffered losses to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, looked to get back into prime title contention at UFC 111. Fitch has won three straight fights since his title loss while Alves, who had been nursing a knee injury, was scheduled to make his first post-title-shot fight.
