TweetObama Backtracking: Open to Taxes for Middle Class
Backtracking on a firm and fast campaign promise, President Barack Obama now says he is “agnostic” about raising taxes on households making under $250,000 a year, including the idea in the general tool bag needed to lower the nation’s crippling deficit.
In an interview with Bloomberg Business Week that hit newsstands Friday, Obama declared that a presidential budget commission needs all options of the table, including tax increases and cuts in such programs as Social Security and Medicare.
“The whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table,” Obama said. “So what I want to do is to be completely agnostic, in terms of solutions.”
Obama pledged repeatedly during the 2008 campaign to exempt households earning less than $250,000 a year from tax increases.
Over the course of time, the White House press secretary Robert Gibbs re-emphasized the president’s pledge, including when White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner were mulling new taxes on the middle class last summer.
Obama also stated in the Bloomberg interview that he believes that limiting the agenda of any bipartisan advisory commission would cripple it from the start.
“What I can’t do is to set the thing up where a whole bunch of things are off the table,” Obama said. “Some would say we can’t look at entitlements. There are going to be some that say we can’t look at taxes, and pretty soon, you just can’t solve the problem.”
The Bloomberg report noted that the middle class would be the likely target of tax increases, because the administration’s budget already has targeted Americans making more than $200,000 with its proposed $970 billion tax increase over the next decade.
That increase is a product of not extending former President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy beyond 2010.

TweetTaxes on any class during these tough economic times will hamper growth and destroy more businesses. This is the easiest thing to understand, yet there are those who still believe raising taxes helps the economy. If people have less money left in their paycheck they will spend less money on the economy to adjust. Once that happens, businesses will be affected across all sectors of industry.

TweetIt's as simple as Econ 101, but you can't get some politicians to understand that. They think that by government having the money, it can do better for us than we can for ourselves.

TweetYep, they always think they know best. You know what is so damn funny is that politicians are not experts at anything except deceiving the American people, and yet so many Americans trust them. Then there are those who were previously lawyers, and sorry to any attorneys on our board but the legal profession has some of the most pathetic human beings on the planet....imho. Thus, the political arena is perfect for those scum buckets.
Anyway, Obama will ultimately raise taxes on us all and ruin the country to even a greater degree. I will be honest and say that I actually am really concerned with the future of our dollar. I actually am worried that we may eventually see hyperinflation and the dollar wiped out in the next decade or so. Also, if this president is elected to a second term I believe he will attempt a Hugo Chavez style dictatorship. But the doubters will cast me aside as a fear monger and continue to trust this man or downplay the severity of his potential policies at most.

Tweetyes..virginia, more taxes are on the way. at first there will be increased taxes via a consumption tax. this will be a "hidden" tax. then the overt taxes will come, via a "roll back" of bush's tax cuts, then higher taxes on businesses--read Fat Cats--that will be passed on as higher prices for us. all of these are taxes. how else can we expect to regain control of the multi-trillion dollar deficit?
please, nobody tell barry what comes after a trillion..LOL..its so sad you gotta laugh.
