      H.R. 45: Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 (Introduced in House)
      Say, where’s the ACLU when you need them to stand up and say “Nyet!” to a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment?

      I found this while perusing the Democratic Underground, but, Say Uncle provides some great information

      1. Require licensing for anybody that owns a gun.

      2. Would require photographs and a thumbprint

      3. Would require passage of a test that covers:

      (A) the safe storage of firearms, particularly in the vicinity of persons who have not attained 18 years of age;

      (B) the safe handling of firearms;

      (C) the use of firearms in the home and the risks associated with such use;

      (D) the legal responsibilities of firearms owners, including Federal, State, and local laws relating to requirements for the possession and storage of firearms, and relating to reporting requirements with respect to firearms; and

      (E) any other subjects, as the Attorney General determines to be appropriate;
      Say Uncle also points to Snowflakes In Hell, which has some great information. Sebastion states

      Normally, I’d tell everyone not to worry too much, because it’s probably not going anywhere, but we can’t take anything for granted in this Congress. Right now the bill has no co-sponsors, and has not been scheduled for a committee hearing, so it is no threat right now. But we should keep an eye on it.

      Some other interesting points of the Bill

      Section 102 (a) (1) a current, passport-sized photograph of the applicant that provides a clear, accurate likeness of the applicant; (what is wrong with a DL?)

      Section 102 (a) (8) an authorization by the applicant to release to the Attorney General or an authorized representative of the Attorney General any mental health records pertaining to the applicant; (that sounds rather intrusive)

      Section 103 (c) looks to be creating a federal firearms card, with your picture and information. This from the Party that goes ballistic over a national ID card.

      Section 104 makes it seem as if all renewals go through the AG of the USA. Does this mean that I have to go to a Federal office to reapply, rather then the Wake Country Sheriff’s office?

      That’s all for now, a more in depth look if it manages to get farther in the House.

      oh the gun control thing is of top priority with the government we have right now, I'm sure.

      I'm glad I noticed this thread because me and my girl are going to get out of the house and do stuff today. I just let my wife know, before she walked out the door to work, that I might pick up a hand-gun. I've been wanting one for a while. never had one. Now that I travel so much, I'd like to have one. And it's my damn right to own and carry one.

      Good for you. One peice of advice, don't get too macho with caliber. When you get down to it you'll want a light carry gun. Don't go with a .22 though, there's no stopping power.

      it has stopping power with ease of light carry.
      This is a newer .380 and its not much heavier. If they had this at the time I probably would have opted for this one.

      A .380 is exactly what I've had in mind. Someone else was telling me about the P3AT. I'm shooting for most bang for buck too.

      A real reliable automatic.
      Even though the old timers will steer you to a revolver because you can drag it behind your car for an hour, dip it in maple syrup and pull the trigger and it still goes BANG!...
      Barring that, this is the way to go.

      lol. I just got back from checking some out. I like the Sig Sauers, of course. There was a Ruger .380 and a S&W 9mm that caught my eye, but I'd really like to find something for less. I know you get what you pay for, so I'm thinking I might check out some used ones. Maybe even check the ads. I'm sure there are some folks selling what they don't need in these tough times.

      I hate Gun Control- so I have these:
      S&W Sigma 9mm
      Ruger 22 Pistol(don't remember the model)
      1-Savage 111 243
      1- Savage 110 243
      1- Savage 11 243
      1- Browning A-5 20ga Mag
      1- Beretta 390 12ga
      1- Yildiz 20ga O/U
      1- Mossberg 410 sigle shot
      1- LC Smith 12ga SxS
      1 Browning Lever action 22lr
      1- Remington Speedmaster 22lr
      2- Mossberg 22lr's

      I think thats it- I will have to look in the safe to verify- I will be picking up a Ruger 10/22 very shortly and one more Yildiz O/U just haven't decided if it will be a 20 or 12ga

      Used handguns are a real good idea considering most owners put 50 rounds through it and rarely ever fire it again.

      that's similar to the conversation I was having with a friend of mine that collects guns. He's bought new and used. He said there are some excellent used finds out there.

      I just have a Savage 20g, and a Mossberg 12g. For some reason I have trouble with the plug in the Mossberg. It's a Ducks Unlimited model. I enjoyed my brother's Russian AK-47 that he bought at a local Guard Arnory gun show just before Clinton signed that bill against assault rifles. Then I let my uncle get ahold of it, and I probably won't get it back until he's done. Like completely finished with life. long story. But that AK is no-one's in the family. It was my brother's, but he has no need for it any longer, but people like to act like it's their's, such as my uncle whose mind is going fast.

      But none of those are practical for my needs. Plus, I've just really wanted a decent hand gun for years now.

      go with a 40 caliber...rounds are cheap, and an all around good round.....9mm are ok, but no stopping power...fun to shoot and way cheap due to military uses it.
      I would not get a .380 if it was my only gun...they are a nice gun to pack for safety, but not so fun for just going out in the bush and shooting beer cans or targets..
