Well, I have 2 years to put together a killer portfolio so that I will be able to get a job as an artist or art director. I have a couple ideas, but if you guys can think of anything that they think would look really cool drawn, painted (oil or acrylic), ink, or sculpture let me know and I might give it a shot. Everyone's heard of a starving artist, and I refuse to be that, so Help me out if you can!

I'm really not sure exactly what you are looking for as far as a scene or just a picture.

I think sunsets are beautiful. When painted they can be absolutley breath taking. Maybe a woman's face or whole body drawn in pencil or pen. A parade with lots of colors. A view from an airplane window. Fairys or angels are always cool. (I drew a picture of a forest scene with fairys for my mom a long time ago, but it got ruined and I didn't finish putting color on it.) How about a hobo clown. Any kind of animal whether they are sleeping, running, etc. An autumn scene, a person from history, an old man, a soldier, the American flag.

      Hopefully this helped you some.

you're probably competent enough, ie, have the skills, so porfolio probably does not have too be killer, just good

folks hire folks they like, who they believe will be good employee's

rack up some success's, big ones, where whatever you do you are in the top ten percentile

art itself is subjective, so it is all great and all okay, and all crap

I've been there... done that! I'm a graphic artist. My best suggestion for experience is go to work for a printer in their graphic department. You could work part-time for one or freelance. Be sure and keep copies both PDF and printed of all your jobs.

The added benefit to working for a printer is on-the-job experience in print production. It will great on your resume too have this experience.

      Here's something that works -
It can be done two ways but it definitely adds to the portfolio.

Work on getting a "commisioned" piece.
Normally, that would be something a business or individual would pay you for exclusively because of your type of work.
That may be hard if you don't have something for them to see first. Most people want to have an early of first piece but are rarely willing to hand over cash for an unknown unless their friends or others have done it first.

Here is how it can be done to your advantage.
Talk to your local library or locally owned book store, something of that nature.
Then explain that you would like to provide them with a sculpture or painting.
Sculpture works great because it could be outside and viewed by many.
The downside is if you want to dramatically increase your odds of getting something placed you may have to pay for it yourself.

But if you were willing to pay for a medium to large sized sculpture to be placed in or out of your local library or small business the chances are good they will let you do so.

Then add that to your portfolio and simply negate the information about you paying to for it.
Having a nice piece like that at a public place would add credibilty to your portfolio.

I've done that on smaller scale but missed to boat on the large stuff with the local libraries because I was preoccupied with other responsibilities.
After they built several new libraries, they all had new large metal sculptures in front of them....personally I don't like them but that is personal taste.

Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.
I'd like to see some of your work.

      Sal has some great ideas.

Folks love original artwork, yet, the problem is they have zeroe idea how to go about getting one.

I like the idea, of going out and offering to do one for whatever organization, something that is personal for them that they would love want, ie, commission so too say

just like a band getting gigs, you gotta knock on club doors and when u get in you gotta have your peeps go nuts and drink like drunks, lol

      anyways, you get the gist

      everyone will have a portfolio

no one will have a portfolio of commisioned work at your age, except you

      good advice, sal

Maybe you could draw something titled "King Arthur Fonzarelli"

and you could have Fonzy from Happy days wearing a crown and holding excaliber.
