What is not a necessity?

TweetLet's be realistic here. Americans have so many things that we believe we HAVE to have. Just think if we did without them how much we would save a month. Here are just a few, in my opinion, that we could do without. Cell phones, especially for kids, video games, cable, ipods, liquor, cigarettes, and there are many more. People keep whining that they have no money. They can't buy groceries or can barely pay for gas, but they ALWAYS have money for other things that are really not necessities. Priorities are definitely screwed up in this day and age. I could personally due without a tv or an i-pod and if i can help it, I will not get my daughter a cell phone, and if we do, there will be restrictions on its use.

Tweetmy daughters cell phone (yes, i know..i said NEVER!) can only dial the numbers i programed and cannot recieve incoming call unless there from numbers i programed. it also has gps...so...i thaught it was a wise decission to get her one.

other than that, we can do without alot and we have!

as far as liquor and smokes....we'll just break into home's to steal thier's, so we really aint gotta go without. the money i make from selling the food stamps can go to pay for the video games (we'll buy used), so that aint really an issue either. and what, with us poaching the wild game in the area preserve, plus stealing the eggs from the niehgbors chickens, we've become pretty adaptive to our situation

I said "are You shiitting me girl???"...thats $300 a month...I know more people that spend $15-$25 a day at starbucks...then ***** cuz they cant afford things...I used to spend $25 a day On Absolute vodka...Thank God I dont drink...hahaha...Now I can spend more on dope...LOLjust kiddin

that is the issue, those folks do it on borrowed money, and business's are built on those extra's, when those extra's people cannot buy because they have no more money and no one willl loan it too them, business's shrink

fwiw, i'm fifty and i don't even have a credit card, it's like crack, i had one 25 years ago for a year because my biz forced me too, and i chucked it

and i had that same discussion with folks a month a go

SERVICES TRIP BUYS EACH MONTH

2,000 bucks home health care worker for my mom and gma
300 maid service on there house and mine
200 lawn service on there house and mind
200 a month private financial news services

that's 2,900 a month of services i purchase

that is part of the economy, since i'm physically capable, i could do more nursing of my ma and gram, i could do the cleaning and mowing the lawn

yet, to be honest, i will never ever give up the maid, i hate too clean, lol

obviously none of the money is borrowed, yet, if my biz declines from here for whatever reason, i can cut out stuff without changing my basic life style

so, your point is correct alot of folks are like this

This what I've been saying all along. I don't see people doing without things. Have they really cut back on their spending. This reminds me of the Ant & Grasshopper. All these grasshoppers all these year just spent all their money and borrowed until they are over their heads, and now they are wanting the Ants to bail them out.

I was taught to put a certain percent of your income away in a saving account. When we were children, my parents would take part of any money we received for birthday, christmas, etc and put it in the bank. I started my first IRA when I was 23 years old. It was my first year out of college... my first job.

Why should I have to bail out anyone? I've always lived below my means and did without. If I put something on my credit cards, it was paid off at the end of the month. The only time I've paid interest payments on a credit card was from my ex-husband who stuck me with his credit card bills for his college.

I don't see the government offering my husband's business any assistance. Nearly 5 months with no work and he couldn't even file for unemployment assistance.

I'm sorry... I'm ranting again. I've been in the worst mood lately. I feel like I've a rubber band about to snap.

TweetDixie you hit the nail on the head! I have no sympathy for people that overspent on buying a house only to discover they could not afford it. Trying to "keep up with the Jones'" as the saying goes. I know so many people that are house poor. They just HAD to have this big house and they are never home to enjoy it because they work constantly to try to pay for it. I agree that why should people like us get stuck bailing others out. It is just not right!
