Victoria, Texas is a town about 80 miles west of Houston. Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this past weekend as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, noting that revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down by 19%.

Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97%, and the cost of daily clean-up and trash collection was down by 84%. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers actually paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards!

The town I use to live in (I still work there) is 40% Mexican and a large amount of them are illegals. They came here because in the early 90's there were tons of carpet mills that needed workers. The unemployment rate was 3% when the rest of the nation was at 6%. There are major problems between the locals and Mexicans in this town as you can image.

My opinion is that these workers do help support the economy. Before you flame me... I don't believe it is right for them to be here illegally. They should be here on work visa or made legal citizens. It's just only right. I have a list of complaints too like they shouldn't be able to get welfare, medicare, draw social security if they haven't paid in the system. They get treated at hospitals when people who have insurance still can't afford to get treatment... etc, but I can tell you that in some areas of the country they do make a difference. The ones I've known who worked in the plants where I've work were extremely hard works. Taking jobs that other didn't want. They were very family oriented and God fearing.

Now just like any other race of people there are those that take advantage of others, steal, cheat... this is a huge problem and it seems like there is a better way to deal with it.

So a town that was booming and growing has now been hit by the housing bust. This has effected our industry tremendously... There aren't as many houses being built. Gas prices and inflation has decreased everyone's disposable income, so they aren't remodeling their homes buying new carpet. The carpet industry has had major layoffs which is a first in their industry. The Mexicans are being laid off and are moving out of the town to find other jobs. They are foreclosing on their homes.

My real estate agent informed me last week that only 52 homes have sold this year. My house has been on the market since Feb 2007... 1 yr & 8 months. Housing in my subdivision were being sold within 60 - 90 days for years up until last year. Only 2 houses have sold this year in my subdivision.

The new stricter immigration laws in GA went in effect in 2007. It was reported in the paper that Mexicans are leaving GA to go some where else... because of these new laws. Yes, the new laws seem to be working, but don't think this isn't hurting our economy as well. It does... just ask business in this town.

True... one of the local carpet mills (one of the top 5 carpet manufactures in the world) is in court over this issue right now. Some employees are suing them over hiring mexicans at lower pay, which deflated wages for all workers. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
