TweetFor those of you who have been around, you know I've done my fair share of bad things in my past. I'm not proud of the things I've done, but at what point will it be behind me?

When I applied for my license to be a Real Estate Appraiser, it took me literally 6 months to collect all my criminal background documents, probation documents, letter of completion, letter of references and all kinds of other crap. Well, to my surprise actually, I was granted a license by the state of Colorado after being completely open and honest about what I had done.

Now, with the state, they only go back 10 years and so I'm able to honestly check all the 'No' boxes now. Well, I just got referred into an appraisal opportunity to do appraisals for USAA, which with all the military in my town, would result in a lot of new business. Well, on the application, they make me sign this waiver that says they can go back into my criminal background to determine if I'm worthy (so to speak) of doing business with them. WTF? How about the fact the state of Colorado felt that I paid my dues and that I'm a different person. They know the state looks into that stuff, so why the hell do they need to. It's like this **** will never ever go away! We are talking 12 years since the last stupid thing I did. All though, it was a very stupid and very big thing (it landed me in boot camp for 90 days), but still, it's over and done with.

So, my dilema is this, I hate having this stuff brought up so I'm hesitating on even finishing the application process because of this. I don't like people I do business with tho know the things I did in my past. That's not who I am now, that was a different person with different motives. Hell, just ask FROGMAN, he's knows me since I was 13 years old. It just pisses me off that these people force you to do this and yet I'm an independant contractor. It's not like I'll be an employee of theirs. It's like they telling UPS, you need to let us do a background check on the drivers perfore they provide the service of delivering our packages. That's what I do, I provide a service for a fee, I don't work for them.

Anyways, I just had to vent because I got so excited about the possiblities of this opportunity and it was probably all for nothing.

If you were me would you try anyways or would you move on?

TweetI would go for it. If they go back that far and bring it up, just tell it like it is, just as you did with the state. Almost everyone has been thru similar circumstances themslves or with someone they know. People usually understand. Go for it. If it happens to go sour, at least you know you gave it your all.

Tweeti agree with horsepwer t. we all know your not the same man, and i know you dont want to bring up or discuss any bullshyt from the past, but thats what you may have to do. you may not! you did it. you paid for it and your a new man becouse of it....just tell it like it is, but dont bite your nose off inspite of your face. this is a good op. for you and the family....dont get frustrated and blow it off. go for it

Tweetgo for it anyways! The worst thing that happens is that you didnt get the job and then you know for sure instead of wondering what if...If you have to discuss it do it. You havent done a bad thing in 12 years which shows that you have changed. Give it a chance especially if you think it has possibilities.

TMan I know how you feel bro. I got a DUI hangin out there and honestly I'm waiting to hear back from this company(which I'm supposed to start on the 5th) letting me know that they won't hire me. But that isn't being optimistic and honestly if I don't get it then it wasn't meant to be. And your a totally changed man and I've always been proud to be your friend... don't worry about it... so go get your sorry arse in the gym and fill out your paperwork.
