      Ive done both so I don't know, currently having a difficult time with my right calve in the front near the solenoid muscle, close to the bone.

      i've worked through them, but they were never that "killing" me pain...

      i had them in basic and i'm sure they turned into stress fractures and they only got worse during basic. it wasn't until the 2 weeks w/o running between basic and ait did they heal..... so i say stay off of them. you won't lose and progress if you rest a couple of weeks. you can still walk or something less stressful so you won't feel like you're doing nothing!! good luck with them!!!

      Well, trrue shin splints are micro fractures caused by pounding or similar repetitive stress. The only way they heal is with rest. I've had them plenty, and you can work through it with pain meds, but best to rest a little before it becomes a bigger pain.
