  • News on my little brother in the Army

He joined the Army about 4 years ago. I was very impressed as I wanted to join the Marines but decided not to. Thats another story though.

Anyhow he has been in Iraq almost the entire time hes been serving.

He is a Humvee driver mostly during the night with nightvison and all the lights off. He doesnt tell me much as he doesnt like to talk about it.

Hes has been "blown up" as he calls it a total of 9 times now. I asked him what that meant since hes still alive and he said that his Humvee was hit enough that it was no longer able to drive. Thats what blown up means to him.

He was lucky enough 8 times out of 9 not to be hurt. The 9th time 1500 lbs of explosives went off that were barried underground. He had shrapnel (spelling) right between his eyes, a piece in his ass, colapsed his lung, broke his ankle and was burned in some places. He had a huge ugly scar next to his armpit where they stuck something in there to fix his lung.

He told me hes getting out as soon as his time is up. I asked him why and he said he was lucky he didnt die. He told me with a tear in his eye at Christmas that he doesnt want to die.

Kinda chokes me up to hear all this from him. I dont know how to feel about the whole war thing. I know Im proud of my brother though. Hes 21 and has a Purple Heart.

God Bless your brother for serving. It take a lot of courage and speaks volumes of his character to serve at the tip of the spear. I'm extremely pleased to hear that he's doing well. Hope and pray only the best for him and your family. Gods speed.

Man, not even sure what to say to that bro...gives me the chills just reading it. That is the ultimate sacrifice and much respect for your brother to serve our country proudly and in such dangerous territory. I wish him a speedy recovery and God bless him and your family and all the other soldiers sacrificing there lives and loved ones to be over there.

It really makes us look at what is important and what is not. While I worry about my protein intake and how much sleep I get each night your brother has to worry about being blown up. He is one brave individual and it makes me happy to hear he is still with us after such an event. Our prayers are with him and his fellow soldiers.

Def. much respect for your brother and others that are in his same situation. It takes alot of guts and courage to be in that situation and stay strong. God Bless him and his safe return.

Thanks for all the support guys! Im going to cut and paste all of these comments to his email. Hopefully it will bring him some cheer.

Here is the email he sent me explaining what happened in his words:

sorry about the wait, but yeah, i'm okay...umm, we were driving down a road, i was in the gun (turret) pointed to the rear (we were the last truck in the convoy) and i started to stand up to tell an iraqi in a car to back away from the truck....the next thing i know, my head is hitting the lap of our dismount and dirts all in my eyes....the initial blast knocked me unconcious for about 10 sec. they pull me out of the truck, and sat me next to the truck...not too sure what went on after that, i was kinda knocked stupid...it turned out to be 1500 lbs of explosives and a 155mm artillery round that blew us up. i have pics, and a little report thingy that i'll show ya once we get back. but overall the whole thing sucked. and they gave me a purple heart for it...so free parking for me! and red heads are ****in great! lol ttyl bro
