This new Lube center opened up here and made me a better offer than what I had so I quit my job and Im starting the new one on Monday.

I need some advice from you guys out there that are managers or supervisors.

The deal is I dont really know how to get respect from these guys that Im going to be managing over. The place I just quit I was also in a manager training program but none of the guys really listened to me because they knew I had no real authority.

This new place started me as a supervisor in training so I dont really know what that means exactly. Should I ask the owner to intro me as a supervisor?

What advice can you guys give me to earn respect and get these guys to listen to me without any resistance or well....*****ing.

You will set the tone your first days...the guys will try and feel you out, and see what they can get away with.....dont let them...go in right off the bat and get a grip on things, and let them know who is boss! You dont need to be a dickhead, but be firm and get the point across that you are confident and you are in charge

Relax Combie and just check out the first day. "Superivsor in Training" can mean anything at this point. Were they really clear on what your duties would be, with an outline of the job?, because ive heard some horror stories about companies that give away titles and then later the employee finds out its a bunch of crap. Play it by ear for now.

the worse thing you can do is try to throw a title at their face. theyll know who you are. go in there and be one of them. you're part of the team. your job is to lead that team.

i personally hate managing personalities. i rather deal with computers all day

Well like I say to the guys that run my NY branch...friends are friends, and business is business. When it comes to business you can't take anything personal. It all comes down to what is the best for the company, PERIOD! If they are not team players that will do whatever it takes to get the job done efficiently with the utmost perfection, then they won't have a job. No if's, and's, or but's about it.

But the key part to being a good leader is you have to pat them on the back and sometimes reward them for doing good. You can't only notice the bad stuff and always be *****ing, because then you'll have employees that hate you and their jobs and it will show in their productivness.

Thanks guys I can always count on some of you for good advice.

What about going in there like a real hard ass then backing off and trying to be cool? I heard that can make them respect you but then get to know you and realize Im a good guy.

Oh and also I need to set the example, like not being late, not goofing around and trying to be cool with all the managers and anyone with authority. Right?

Just be there early and be cool. They will know who you are and they know they have a certain point that they can go to before they have to worry about you saying something to them. Only play the boss card as the last resort. If they like you then they will want to do what you need them to do, plain and simple.

respect, i my opinion, is earned. it's not something you can walk in and automaticly expect to get. yes, you can expect a certain level of it becouse of the position you hold, but to build REAL respect takes time. they are gonna be watching you. your decissions. you have to lead by example, but at the first opurtunity that they are being wornged by YOUR boss, you have to go to the mat for them...trust is built, not given. be you. put yourself in their shoes, and when the day comes that one crosses the line, you have to reprimand them. throw them a bone when you can...treat them with the respect that you want to be treated with. it takes much more that this, but it's a start...build YOUR team, and if you move on, your team will follow, witch puts you in an even stronger position with the company.

      yeah,

go in early even 10-15 minutes, stay late, even 10-15 minutes, and keep you're mouth shut for the first month, keep eyes open and ears open and you will have a good feel for what's what

ask questions of lots of folks, be humble, ask for help in how to do something or why, even if you know it, just to make em feel like they are helping

ask them every now and then what they need help with

in reality most of the tone is set from 2-3 levels above you, if they are good, you're job is easier, if they are not, well, you're job is hard

      good luck

i agree. but i do feel you can set the tone for your peep's regardless of those above you (to a point). just be a leader, and remember this...you dont have to be an a$$hole to be a manager, and you'll be more successful if your not!

I think the plain and simple rule that has helped me in similar situations is to remember that everything you say, do, etc as a "supervisor" is judged by those people workig for you. What ever expectations you have for your employees, make sure that you hold youself to the same--if not a HIGHER--set of expectations. Everything from showing up to work looking professional, to your language and the way you carry yourself, and to how you interact with each individula will reflect upon your character and your ability to be an effective and respsted supervisor.

Just my $0.02. Good luck with the new job.
