I've had cable internet for years now and recently I'm really starting to be totally unhappy with the service. One day it honestly can be really damn fast 5.5 mbps and some day it goes slow like damn dial up.. less then 1 mbps and I pay 45 bucks for this Comcast ISP.

Now I know Cable is LAN - Local Area Network and the bandwidh is shared.. so if you experience that your cable internet is slow at times its because your neighboors are using the internet at the same time... the connection will SLOWDOWN ALOT especially if your neighboors like to download large files, host their own servers etc..

Now Verizon DSL is only 14 bucks a month I think with 1 year agreement and the download is close to 1mb ps..which afterall isnt that bad. DSL uses a telephone line to get the service but you can be online and your phone line will remain open.. not busy...like with DIAL UP.

Also DSL you have your own connection.. its not shared with anyone else BUT YOU..

Also lately my cable modem just doesnt receive any data transmision and I know that they are always resetting things.. so I end up being without the net for 15-20 mins..

      What do you all think..

Cable all the way for me. Where I live if you can get broadband it's better. Sure, it has some days where things aren't perfect but I can honestly say that in the 4 years I've had it I've only had it go out about 8 times and each time was something to do with work on the line and it was back up within in hours. It was frustrating but I've heard of people having way more issues with DSL here than broadband. It's all going to come down to the provider. It's like cell phones, whoever has the most towers is going to have the best service area. I use Verizon and I get much better service than anyone else I know. I pay more, but I can't stand dropped calls.

I think our public library has DSL and i think it was pretty fast. I don't know about the downloading tho. That is a good deal tho with the Verizon. Id cancel the Comcast and try it out. You don't hav anything to loose. I used to have Comcast and they are very poor with customer service and bad connections.

problem with DSL is speed is dependant on the distance you are from the source. it can drop off drastically.

a good cable connection is twice as fast as DSL at it's best.

I have roadrunner and notice that my speed is all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if it's spyware or adware that my virus/spyware protection isn't picking up. That stuff easily corrupts protection software then your computer will run like its from the 1980's. Make sure your stuff is not corrupted.

I completely reboot my whole system atleast once every other month. Sure it sucks to lose a lot of info, but it deletes everything good AND bad. Then whatever those systems can't pick up is gone.

Once I reboot my computer always runs 10X faster than before I reboot.

I use System Suite 6 and it's awesome. It catches everything. I used to have Norton and it would say I was virus free. As soon as I added the System Suite, of course if was versoin 5 back then, it caught dozens of viruses. Now, the new version has this net defense thing that anytime you pc tries to connect to the net it pops up and asks you if this is a valid thing. For instance, you open adobe and it tries to see if theirs a new version. Also, it has a Recovery Commander that's super bad ass. I will be online and all of a sudden my Recovery Commander will start up and a window will pop up and tell me my pc or something running on my pc is trying to download something. I click cancel and stop the invasion. Hands down, this software kicks the shit out of Norton, McAfee or anything else you can find. I swear, you will be blown away with how through this software is at stopping unwanted spyware and virsuses. I will never use another program again. My pc has been virsu free every since I got it. And, if I do get a virus, not only will it locate it but it will located the lines in the registry and you can delete those too so it's doesn't come back. The reason you have to keep rebootingyour system is because you don't get the virus completely out ofthe registry and it keeps going online in the back ground and downloading the .exe file for the virus. Until you take it out of the registry it will never go away. And, if it's been incoded in your boot up then it just keeps getting put back when you reboot.

I use Cable and the same thing happens with the variance in speed. I'd switch for $14/mth.

Yeah dude Norton is garbage! They for a long time said there was no such thing as spyware or adware until other companies started coming out with things to combat it. Then all of a sudden they say it is real. They are one crap azz company!

As you can see, where I live, broadband kicks ass. I'm double the speed of some places and faster than everyone's average nation wide.

Go to Best Buy and get System Suite 6. They usually offer a rebate and it's less than norton or McAfee. You will never use another program again. And, if you do have stuff it wont get rid of for some reason, go to ewido.net and download the free mal-ware program. That things kicks ass too. It has never told me once that there was something that couldn't be removed. Most people who write the code for these viruses put special instructions to avoid deletion or detection by Norton and McAfee so that's why those programs don't work. Chances are, if the majority of people used System Suite I would have to change because they would write code for those programs too.
