Well, for a DB I would bet they will want 4.6 or faster. Probably the same with a RB. Of course, if you arent' that quick but you can pack one hell of a punch you may still make the RB as the between the tackles guy. I was reading about this high school kid a while back who was only 5'8" but he was 205 lbs and played RB. No speed at all, I'm talking like close to a 5 second 40 but he was a damn tank. He averaged 180 yards a game because no one could bring him down. I think is highest was like 260 or something sick. Those are usually numbers you see guys like Faulk having in HS. This guy never went outside, ever. Just pounded people between the tackles. there was one comment from an all-state LB that played against him and he said that this dude would hit you and it felt like a brick wall. He said you would try to wrap him up, but by the that time you are on your back and he's running over you. I think the kid was in Georgia or South Carolina or something. Anyways, to make a long story short, he never made it to college ball because of his lack of speed. Too bad, he would have made a great lead blocker IMO. Of course, he would have to get to the hole before the RB so maybe that's why he didn't make it.

But, worst case senario, go find the track coach and ask him to help you work on your speed. And do what he tells you (on the side). So, if you do make the team you continue to work on your speed drills and get faster. I used to run like a 4.8-4.9 until the track coach took me aside and told me I was running wrong. My technique just sucked. He got me down to a 4.6 at 190 lbs. I was a LB. I also ran a 23.6 200 meter that year. Prior to that my best 200 time was 25-26 seconds. Technique is everything in sprinting. Not that I was fast or anything but I could catch a lot more guys than I ever did the years before. If I had learned how to run correctly when I was in 8th grade, I don't know, I could maybe have got it down to 4.5.

Absolutely! There aren't going to be a whole lot of talented guys with 4.5 speed in Div II. If they are good, they will go Div I. So, if you have the strength, vert and speed you should be able to get a DB spot. All you have to do now is learn the defenses. As long as you know exactly where you should be every play, you will be good to go IMO. If you are really good, you will know where everone else is supposed to be every play. Kinda like Lynch of Denver, that guy knows where everyone is supposed to be on every play and he will yell at them if they are out of place. Not to be a dick, but tomake sure that all angles are covered. Ray Lewis is probably even a better example of that. He makes sure everyone is where they sould be every play and he will correct them if they aren't. That's a leader right there.

True, there is something instinctive about football. Knowning how to anticipate the unexpected. That comes with experience.

If I could give ya my 2cc It`d be the following:

Get your cardio work done early, do your sprints, hollow 100s, 10 by 10s, whatever you`ve got the guts to do and don`t forget some long distance work 3 or 4 times a week. Start yesterday.

If your 40 time is good enough, the coach will let you practice and when you start running all those sprints with the other RBs, believe me - the coach will notice which players come in 1st,2nd and espically notice when the same bro (that`s you) is still comming in top one or two in the last couple of sprints.

Football is an endurance game as much as it is a strength game.

Do yourself a favor and start hitting some explosive plyometric work. This will aid in all combine related measurables while making you quicker/stronger off the snap and in and out of cuts/ routes. Its time to start training sport specific, it will make a world of difference.
