I have always worked out in a local gym and paid the monthly dues. Well, I haven't worked out now in over a year, so yes I am now out of shape and overwieght, but I am looking to start back again the first of the year. I was thinking of putting together my own home gym upstairs in the house and was wondering if this is a good idea? Would I be better off going back to the gym? It seems that when I worked out at a friends home gym a while back that I got a better feeling workout. I have been looking around on the internet at all of the home gym stuff. It is rather expensive but looks to be good stuff. Let me know what your opinions are on this subject as I am eager to get started again.

Yeah, I could see that being a possibilty. The good thing is that my wife is a workout freak. When she starts on her diet and doing her exercises, she never misses a beat. That would be a plus for me

buy a resista ball, dumb bells, squat rack and a bar bell and you will be set, I wouldn't suggest a "home gym" system

Thanks for the replies...where is a good place to get them? The only thing around here is a sporting goods store and they don't really have that much.

I found a really nice setup at Sams in my town. It has everything that I need, other than dumbells, for 400 dollars. Comes with 300lbs of Olympic weights.I think I will go with that.

Don't know if you purchased any equipment yet but I suggest that you order a catalog from www.ironmind.com their equipment is exceptional.

The basic equipment you will need

An olympic barbell set (with collars)
Adjustable dumbbells (with spring collars or spin lock dumbbell handles)
Adjustable uprights with safety catches (for squats, pressing, etc.)
      An adjustable bench
      A door pull up bar

If you have a few more dollars:
      add in a dipping belt
      Dipping stands
      A mat for the floor

other things you can make easily are:
      wrist roller
      calves raise block

Anything else you don't really need, you can do exceptionally well with this equipment.

be carefull with twist lock DBs. when they get heavy, they can tear your legs up.

i have a home gym, and a gym membership. like home much better. no waiting. if i have to wait 5 minutes for anything, my workout is fucked up.

I know what you mean about waiting. I am going to go with the setup from Sams. It has the olympic size bars with collars, safety catches, preacher curl attachment, lat pull down, smith machine, squat rack, butterfly, leg extensions, etc....Basically everything except dumbbells for 400. It will be hard to beat that. And it comes with the 300lb olympic size weights too. I think it is a deal. They were sold out of them Thursday or it would be at the house right now. They are getting more next week. I will post up some pics once I get it home and setup. Or you can go to their website and look at it.

Well, me and a buddy used to work out in his shop. With all the equipment we had, it was basically a gym. Working out there was the best workouts I had ever had. I tend to socialize too much at the gym. If I get in the gym and no one is there then I get in a good workout. I think I will do good at home. I have a buddy that wants to come over and work out too so that will help.
