TweetDEAD BATTERY
TweetWhat do you guys think? I go to turn on my car and nothing lights up when I turn the ignition key. I mean nothing will work. The interior/exterior lights, radio, and even the digital odometer which always displays even without the ignition key in, is completely blank. I've had a battery die before and I was still able to turn the light switch on, but this time nothing. Dead battery?

TweetYou think so? Gotta go get a new battery tomorrow thats a bill at least
Tweetdid somebody disconnect your battery terminals are they all goobered up and you lost a connection?
it is odd that you have absolutely zero power.....
TweetYeah I just went and disconnected and reconnected them and still nothing. The weird thing is that with my key out of the ignition, the odometer displays its reading, when I turn the key it goes blank. Also when this first happened the motorized belt track began to move back and then stopped midway. I should also note that the battery is probably 3-4 years old.
Tweet3-4 years is about that time. I've had batteries go up to 8 though, so it's not ridiculously old. First step is to try jumping it. If you can't jump it, probably bad battery. If you can jump it, and then it runs down and stalls again, probably bad alternator. So try jumping and we'll go from there.
TweetNo don't jump it!!! If you jump it with a battery that is that dead and you have a good alternator it want be but for a few minutes because it will burn out every diode inside of it trying to charge the battery. Partially charged battery=Jump it Totally dead battery=burnt up alternator The alternator is made to keep a battery charged but not strong enough to pull the current needed to charge a battery from a zero state to full and power automobile at same time. It will be a hard lesson learned cause you will be buying both and alternator and a battery.
TweetFirst, did it start yesterday ok for you??
Cause like nate said it's odd that it would be that dead that fast
TweetWell ok but I've done it tens of times without killing the alternator. If that's really an issue then leave the cables on, try to start it, and if it fires right up turn it off. That way the alternator isn't charging at all.Originally Posted by DIRTY_SOUTH
And by the way a decent battery shouldn't cost you $100. If it's really that expensive might as well go high-end with an Optima or an Orbital for around $130.
TweetI agree with DS. But it doesn't make sense to just go totally dead like that. There should be something, a dome light, something. Anyways, I would take the battery out and take it to Autozone and they can test it for you. It could be a bad cell, no water or just needs charging, but let them tell you. If it dead, then buy new. If it's not, then mayber your alterantor is already dead and you have been running on just battery the last 2-3 days. A battery will only last 2-3 days without an alternator.
Automotive rule of thumb: There are three things you never ever go cheap on, battery, brakes and tires. IMO you should buy towards the top end on these three items.
Tweetwhat about the wing and hood? gotta go carbon fiber on those silly! carbon fiber = mucho HP! and lots of flames!Originally Posted by T-Man007
