TweetAntidepressants and folic acid
A recent study conducted by Harvard University, found that folic acid may enhance the response to antidepressant drugs. In patients previously unresponsive to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, folic acid boosted the response rate by 40 percent. Researchers also found that supplementing the diet of the clinically depressed with 500 micrograms (mcg) of folate enhances the rate of response of Prozac, especially among women.
Folate works by changing levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, all of which are linked to depression. The results of the Harvard study will be published in the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry.
