dont compare to pull-ups, but close-grip pull downs are good for the v-shape.

you cabn try this also which has helped me. Sitting facing away from the knee holders on a lat pulldown machaine use a close gip and feel your lats stretch after the pulldown dont worry too much about weight you want to stretch the lats to make them wider. This pulls out all the little muscles in your back making them bigger which in turn makes your lat width wider.Do these (assuming your on cycle)w/ a superset of wide grip chins and your back will blow the fuk up

ok picture yourself on a lat pulldown machine with your legs locked in under the pads to keep yourself in place. Just spin around so ur facing the other way and your legs are not locked in(obviously). Put a close grip on the pully and pull down. On the way back up let the pully stretch ur lats on the way back up.This hits ur lats from a different angle.

this also helps strengthen the core of the body by making you force ur body to stay in place.

pullups... all you need for back is a pull up bar.
another good one i like that i just started using is where you set the cables somewhat high and get on your knees. using D-handles pull down and bring your elbows to your side.
      good day bro
