  • What degree would I need to own a gym or health club?

I plan on opening up my own gym in about 6 years or so when I'm done with my schooling. but my question is should I get my degree in business admistration or health managment? Does anyone own a gym or health club here?

    Degree in Compassion

Learn to have compassion and understand all the folks mentioned in your signature......THOSE ARE YOUR CLIENTS!!!!

Kind of kidding, yet, it is true.

Great that you have a goal, IMHO, I get out the phone book, get on the phone, and directly ask owners of gyms this question.

What will happen is that 1/3 of calls will not be re-turned, 1/3 will not really want to be bothered, and 1/3 will be inspired to help you, ala, obe wan konobe, ( sp ) . Successful and open businessmen love to share their knowledge to hungry students that are smart ambitious and have compassion.

Let this smart guys guide, they are your best resource.

    Good Luck

You need a degree in money.

Money enough to pay a lease and purchase alot of very expensive equipment. Also money enough to advertise, plus do some promotions to bring in customers.

If you plan on just sticking to a single small mom and pop gym, then a degree in health management.

If you want to grow it big, and possibly open more than one location...then Business.

well...I work at the Ritz-Carlton and I like how they treat their guests and the guests always tell me how our hotel has the best service out of any hotel around and this is why they chose the Ritz over all the others. I would like my gym to be like that.

I would like to open up a 5 star gym with everything possible in it and eventually open others. This goal is a little unrealistic I have been told, but I will figure out a way to do it. I have a lot of work to do, researching, school and the hardest part is trying to pursuade investors to give me their money to do this.

My plan is to speak with GM's and ask them how they run their gym and what works best for them and what didn't work best. My old supervisor is a GM at ClubONE in the SF, so I plan to talk to her first, but ClubOne is rahter small but it targets the clients that I am looking when I decide to open my gym. As far as talking to the other GM's of much larger clubs I plan on lying to get information from them. I'm just going to tell them I'm doing a school project and I need their advice because I know they will not give me the time of day if I just say I woudl like to open my a gym similiar to this one and I need your help.

Anyway, that is my plan. and yes my signature will not apply to the clients who chose to join my gym. the people in the sig are probably the mojority who would come anyway, cept frail wife beater boy.

I'm assuming Nate owns a gym or opened one, what type of gym does he own or manage?

                  Monster,

What is the point in Lying?

That goes against every principle that you say that you want to uphold.

Also, can guarantee you will get ten times more information if you are honest and state your real reason and goal for calling. Smart successful people love to help young go getters, these are the folks you want to talk to and get advice, the others info does not count, it will be not worth knowing.

Money, the world is awash in money. Ask the next ten people you meet if they have money, and everyone will say yes.

There is plenty of money out their. What their is not plenty of out their is young leaders that have a vision, integrity and SHOW the ability to do what they say with the least amount of problems.

If this is your goal and visions, start documenting all this stuff, write it down, ie, I talked to so and so and this is what they said, and be specific. The better your research and record keeping better your chances for success.

And they got tiffany and rolex watches, so why not a gym that has platinum standards as opposed to Bally's.

Price Temps, Price Sells, It is a Mark of Quality

( if in fact there are never ever any blemishes in the product )

Excellent reply Trip, I appreciate it. About not telling the truth, some people that I talked to about doing it said they wouldn't make time for me because it wasn't an obligation for them so it would probably not happen at all. So I came up with that idea, but if you saY I should tell the truth then I will, plus I would feel a lot better about telling the truth regardless because I hate how I feel when I lie.

You're right, their is plent of money out there. You have some good advice, what else do you suggest?

Keep your eyes and ears open you never know who you are talking too...

Here is the No. 1 Thing To Know When Seeking Money:

                      What does Big Money Want?

                      Answer: NO PROBLEMS

The last thing big money wants is to be spending it's time babysitting holding hands etc. Big money is either out making more or spending it.

So, it is not being sexy, smart, big promises, it is all about INTEGRITY.

INTEGRITY: ( definition ) A high regard for the truth and the upholding of standards.

See, that is why you never ever lie. One little one leads to others and then when you are reaching, almost at the top, that bad habit of thinking it is okay to lie sometimes will destroy.

Determine what your personal and business standards will be and never ever violate them, this is what character. Character lasts a lifetime and pays the highest dividends in life, a buck last's until tommorrow and then we want another.

                      Leaders are Readers.

Read Read Read Read Read and do the Research

For you suggest any thing by Warren Buffet or about Buffet.
To make money, and most importantly keep it, you need to know the value of a dollar.

And what is a dollar worth?

That is a critical question you need to know.

Cause here is a hint, a dollar is not a dollar.

                      Good Luck

                        Oh and re-read first post.

A man of integrity a leader always seeks first too understand...........not CRITICIZE..........which is what your signature says...............it screams out cricicizm and condenms poeple you know not one thing about........it screams out too big money here's a guy who will cause problems for our business cause he's not smart enough to know you don't criticize and codemn other folks, so what we got here is a guy who causes problems rather than solves them

not trying too sound harsh, yet, you asked, and it is the most important thing of all, it is why I posted it first, because it is more important than all others

you are absolutly right on all your points, I watch my supervisors at work and the follow those same standards because that is what the Ritz-Carlton is all about, but they do them very well and the one's who don't, dont get moved up in positions, they either just stay at the same level or get fired because they don't bring in money.

Now... I'm curious to ask you this because you are so knowlegiable on this topic, what do you do for a living and how do you know so much about this if you don't mind me asking?
