Our group kayaked around Prince William Sound for a month. On a particular night, I was on 'bear watch'. Basically I kept an eye out for bear scrounging around the perimeter of our camp. Anyway, with the moon full above me, and sleeping sea birds on the rocks around me - I walked over a dry stream bed, looking down it.

To my horror, I saw a bears profile in the moonlight - frozen as it watched my movement. My breath caught in my throat as I too, froze in place. The crisp night air was silent, except for my ragged frightened breath. Trying to control my bladder, I ran over in my mind what I should do....should I run screaming - possibly being overtaken by the bear? Perhaps I should start making noise, shouting and waving my hands to firghten it away? I thought about just falling down and curling up, so the bears long fangs and claws wouldn't immediately cut my neck or face. Minutes went by, and I wondered if the bear even had seen me, perhaps he was looking the other way! Very slowly I crept backwards, towards camp. As my position shifted, I noticed in the moonlight that the bear was very irregularly shaped, and didnt seem to have a head. Or even legs. Suspicion over-rode thoughts of self-presevation, as I walked towards the beast, nodding my head up and down to get a better picture of it.

Finally feet away, I walked the last steps towards it, and placed my hands on the huge 'bear' boulder.

The next morning, when asked over breakfast what, if anything, had happended during my watch, I said "No, absolutely stone silent."

      Lol... dumbass!

We have a bear that's ravageing our vineyard at the moment. Focker left a huge pile of poop about 10 feet from my front door! He's been comming back every year for about 4 years now and we've still never seen him.

I had a simular thing happen in Wyoming. I was in cow camp, about 40 miles up in the mountains, a griz had been killing sheep on the mountain above my camp less than a mile away.

On nite the urge to pee hit me, I crawled out of the sack and went stumblin outside, once I was a bit away from camp I started to pee, all awhile listening for any sound or movement. When I suddenly focused in on a bear just paces from me, with me in such a vunerable position, I stared hard, not knowing what my options were. I was frozen in place overcome by fear, and my heart in my throat

I kept staring hard and the darn thing disapeared! My fear of a bear was so great my imagination gave me one. Neadless to say I learned to not drink before going to sleep & hold it if I had to go.

Well... let me add my story...

About 3 weeks ago, I went outside and away from the house a bit in the middle of the night to smoke a J.

I'm smokeing away enjoying the stars, when I hear some racket in the vineyard probably 20 feet away. It was dark so I just attributed it to leaves blowing around etc. A couple minutes later, more racket.. this time it made me a little nervous but just thought it was the weed makeing me edgy. The 3rd time I heard noise, I decided to make a little noise hopeing that if it was an animal I'd scare it away.. didn't hear nothing. By this time I was done my J and fealing a little edgy so I went back into the house.

Totally forgot about it until the next day we find that the bear had been back for the 1st time this year and had eaten a whole crapload of grapes exactly where I kept hearing the noises from..

There was a bear not 20 feet away from me and I didn't even know it...
