I need to have mine out, 2 are impacted, the other 2 are only partially in. I should have had it done long ago, but I didn't, and I know there are added risks to having it done now. Here's the thing, since they're impacted, it needs to be done in day surgery in a hospital. My health insurance won't cover the costs (3-4k I was told) because it's not "medically necessary". They don't hurt or anything, but I want to get braces (blech, I know, but my teeth aren't absolutely perfect and it really bothers me) and I can't get them without having my wisdom teeth removed.

I'm thinking of appealing the decision, getting a letter from the oral surgeon saying it should be done, my dentist, and an orthodontist saying he needs them out to put braces on. Should I also tell my Dr that they're causing headaches/jaw pain as well?? Would this make it medically necessary??

It pisses me off, it's not like I WANT to have braces on cuz it's the cool thing to do! And with so many people having their wisdom teeth out, it's like why the hell am I having a hassle having it done??

      (sorry so long )

Honestly, I'd start complaining about pain and cronic migranes.

They have no idea if it's actually hurting you or not. And it's not like your cheating the system, they will start to hurt eventually.

I'm glad I don't have this problem with my dental coverage. Pulling teeth is covered 100%, wether it's necessary or not. Replaceing that tooth however is only 60% covered because they consider that to be "cosmetic".

well I got all 4 of mine out at once and one was impacted. My dental insurance covered most of it, do you have actual dental insurance or just medical insurance?

It was an enjoyable experience for me, no pain, got a few days off from work and I don't get headaches anymore.

My dentist AND the oral surgeon both said it should be done in a hospital and I be put under due to the potential complications because I'm 24, and the teeth are grown into the bone. Normally they're done at around 16 or so because they're not into the bone yet.

The dental insurance covers 80% of the cost of extraction, it's just the health insurance that won't cover the cost of me being in day surgery.

Yeah, I was thinking that was high.

I got mine done at a dental surgeons office.

Total bill for anestesia, and removeing the 2 teeth was approx $1000Cdn. or around $600US. I'd think you could probably get all 4 done for around $1000 US.

umm I got mine taken out last year when I was 25, at the oral surgeon's office, when they put me under, the doctor said "here comes the margarita" thats all I remember it felt good.

Then maybe I should see a different oral surgeon? The guy was recommended by someone, but he's like 70 years old I swear, so I was kinda nervous anyhow lol

They put me under and everything. I'm 24 yo... wasn't done at the hospital. But it wasn't my regular dentist that did it either, it was a "dental surgeon". Unless there's something else going on, you shouldn't have to go to the hospital. Up here, it's VERY rare that anyone goes to a hospital for teeth problems. And even then, it's usually the emergency room with their teeth smashed out. The hospital won't fix the teeth, just stop the bleeding. That's up to the dentist or dental surgeon.
