I was in the Navy and had 4 back surgeries while enlisted and was medically separated in 2012. PM me if you have any questions. I went through the PEB process and can shed some insight on what takes place.

Unfortunately there is a stigma with injured soldiers. It is looked down upon if you are hurt. So a lot of soldiers will downplay an injury to avoid going in profile are being called a shitbag. This is even more common in infantry units. Tell you nephew to see the army doc for everything. Because when it comes time to get out you can claim it all through the VA.

Unfortunately that is the way they work. It seems that their philosophy is that they will do the minimal amount of work possible in order to get someone back to work. It took me a year of fighting with the Dr's on the carrier I was on to give me a referral to see an orthopedics Dr. And as someone else posted, those that are injured are seen as shitbags. People think they're just malingering while other people work hard.

If he ends up being medically separated he will have to go through the PEB process. Whether he gets any disability is a toss-up. I had 2 microdiscectomy/lamenectomy surgeries and 2 fusions. The first fusion was a failed attempt because the first dr didn't follow procedure and I didn't fuse. The next Dr had to take a bone graft and create a "bone cement" that would go in with the new hardware they installed.

After everything was said and done, the lasting sciatic pain, and the scar tissue that was left in my lower back due to having been cut open so many times, I was found to be 10% disabled. In order to receive any form of benefits from the VA he will need more than 30%.

Tell him if he has any other issues such as acid reflux, migraines, joint problems, sleep apnea, even toothache, he should go in and have it documented. Everything he writes down will be taken into account when they go to finalize his overall disability rating.

He is headed home for a visit this weekend. Still is having a lot of pain as the shot worked for a couple of days. he is just 20 and only been in for a year and loves it. Would it be a problem for him to see docs/get tests when he comes home?

he will have to pay out of pocket for that without a referal from his pcm/tricare and they are super stupid strict with them. so bad so that if you go to the er while away and they dont deem it an emergency then they can make you pay for it. that really sucks that he is hurt that early in his career. i didnt get my first major injury until i had been in for almost 8 years and i had to fight to stay in. you also know how they did me with the last really bad injury by letting it die and not acting promptly to get it fixed. military medicine sucks from the branch i came from, hopefully they are better and faster in the army

He is still has his parents insurance as his secondary insurance so usually the seconday picks up the remainder. I hope he gets better cause this is a really good place for him to be. I know that you went through a lot guns and that sux but you are proof that a person can succeed and should not ever give up.
