Nobiletin and tangeretin are polymethoxylated flavones naturally occurring in citrus. Initial research showed they were quite helpful for cholesterol, fat, and blood sugar metabolism. Newer research has shown they are potent neuroprotective nutrients. The most recent study shows they inhibit the replication of a common respiratory virus associated with bronchitis – and they did so more effectively than the anti-viral drug (ribavirin) typically used for this application.
The researchers showed that these nutrients directly blocked the replication of the virus within cells, as well as inhibiting the entry of the virus into cells. Tangeretin was especially good “turning down the volume knob” on viral replication within the cell.
