Amino acids are chemical compounds that combine to form proteins. They are the main building blocks of life. They result from the breakdown of proteins. Our body needs a number of amino acids to break down food items into simpler forms, to grow, repair body tissue and perform a variety of major functions. They are no doubt one of the most important parts of human body. Amino acids are classified into three major groups. These groups include essential amino acids, non essential amino acids and conditional amino acids. Essential amino acids are organic compounds that cannot be made by food we eat. They come from the food that we eat. These blocks of protein are nine in number. They include histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan threonine, and valine. On the other hand, non essential amino acids are organic compounds that are produced in the body even when they are not obtained from the food we eat. Examples of these acids include alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid. Apart from these two types of amino acids, the third one, conditional amino acids are not essential ones.
