TweetThat is awesome!!! Any martial arts is great for kids
TweetI used to train in BJJ 7 or 8 years ago and was forced out because of a divorce...blah blah blah. I have since gotten remarried and have a step son. He was around 5 at the time we got together. Over the years I have showed him a few things and he is a really fast learner. So we finally got him into a BJJ class and he is now addicted! He is 10 years old now and I would have given anything for someone to start me out that young. He is freakishly flexible and really smart so I think he will be really good in a few years. There is a kid in his class that actually won 1st place in the State of TN grappling tournament. I told my step son to work with him as much as possible.
The good thing is it gives me an excuse to get back into it myself. I'm 34 now and it has been so long that I will basically be starting over myself...but it should be fun. I think we are going to do BJJ and Muay Thai both. I figure if he sticks with it, he will be hard to handle in a few years! Needless to say, I am pretty excited!

TweetI agree! He has a great teacher too. He never raised his voice with the kids, had a good personality, and was basically teaching the kids that it was for self defense and not beating people up. For example, he was teaching them full mount and he said "You take the kid down, get full mount, get wrist control, and then yell for a teacher to come break it up." Great things!!

TweetMan I agree 150%! Unfortunately, his dad has killed his confidence and I am steadily trying to build it back. He has the potential to be a great athlete, but has lacked the confidence. I finally got him into football last year and he was a stand out once he believed in himself. Now I'm trying to get him in a position to not worry about being bullied because that has somewhat became an issue this past year. It's a work in progress but he is steadily gaining more confidence and building his self esteem.
Like you said, many times, hearing the same things from a total stranger really hits home!

TweetAwesome decision man.Martial arts is an amazing lifestyle and can only benfit anyone thats involved in it.I have a school and have been involved it it for most of my life.Definitely a plus for a kid or adult in every aspect.
Tweetoh yeah. thats great. my son did it for 2 years. he liked it alot. one of my coworker's sons has placed in his age and weight class since he started. he is also the runner up state champ wrestler. the kid is a grappling monster. i hope your stepson can excel like that
TweetMy step son tried to stab me with a butcher knife. Thank God for holiday inn.
TweetI started my Muay Thai today.
It all came back quickly. I haven't lost as much technique as I thought I would have. I have some flexibility issues, but that will be taken care of before long. The boxing technique was second nature as I boxed for a while, so we moved into Muay Thai pretty quick. The foot work is a lot more different than I figured it would be as compared to boxing. A lot more square than the bladed boxing stance. So that will take the most getting used to for me. We didn't get to elbows. We mainly did punching combos and then added kicks into the combos and lastly knees were thrown into the combo. VERY good stuff. I will work on this at home now since I have all of the gear. I want to progress as quickly as possible.

Tweetwish you lived closer. hard to find training partners away from the camp. my den is wall to wall mats and gear and i cant find anyone to train with. even posted on a martial arts website forum.
i did have a hapkido guy come by. he told me he had bad knees and i couldnt kick his legs. all i could do is box and he was 3 inches taller and 30# bigger with really good kicks. i got beat up pretty good. add my leg kicks and i would have chopped his ass down. (as soon as the dr gives me all clear i am going back)

I would be all over that! I have tried to get my friends to come over and train. I even offered to completely fill my garage with mats or whatever, but they are all too damn lazy. I would have never gotten back to it had my step son not gotten interested. Now it's all he talks about, so I should be good for a while...haha!! I tell you what though....I have been sore all over since Friday!!! I just THOUGHT I was in shape.

Tweetoh yeah. the soreness never stops it just gets easier to deal with. i have been off over 2 months due to my broke back. go tues to the doc. if he says i can return i will. it will be like starting over. maybe not that bad but it wont be good
TweetMuay Thai has been going great! I also started back in BJJ this past Monday, but it aggravated my knee injury again. I think it's just the fact that the movements are not what my knee has been used to since injuring it, so maybe that will work itself out. The same thing happened when I first started running afterwards. I can't remember if I posted about it or not but back in January I hurt my knee doing seated leg extensions. I worked through it for most of the year but it just got too frustrating so my wife talked me into seeing a therapist friend of mine. Turns out, he thought my meniscus had pushed out of the joint. We did some rehab and the pain had gone away until the BJJ class. But I think it will just take some time to get my knee acclimated to the new movements. We will see...

TweetOh and my step son has a BJJ tournament this weekend! I am really excited about that!! He has only been training a month but he wants to do it and the teacher said that what he will learn in one tournament is like the equivalent of 6 classes. The school is doing it as a team.
