Silymarin (milk thistle) is widely regarded as a top liver nutrient. It offers excellent protection against a polluted world. A double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial in patients with ulcerative colitis found that 140 mgs per day of silymarin for six months resulted in complete remission in 35 of 38 patients.
The study showed a significant improvement in hemoglobin, meaning that blood was no longer leaking through the inflamed intestinal walls. Sedimentation rate, a general marker of inflammation, was significantly reduced. However, there was no change in the placebo group.
This study indicates that the anti-inflammatory and tissue protective properties of silymarin can be used to help those with varying levels of digestive inflammation, including the rather serious ulcerative colitis.
