Almost 300 movies have their premiere on the glitzy red carpets at the TorontoInternational Film Festival (TIFF), and not all of them are artsy fartsy crap. Sure, one of the distinct pleasures of TIFF is to catch a film from a country youcouldn’t identify on an atlas -- that and snapping photos of Johnny Depp or Bobby DeNiro on your phone while tweeting about how you guys are best buds now. Butthere are also the films that are trying to lay down a path to Oscar, like KeiraKnightley’s latest prestige pic, Anna Karenina, or Tom Hanks'universe-consuming Cloud Atlas. There’s also bound to be majordisappointments, like Ryan Gosling’s latest pairing with his Blue Valentinedirector, Derek Cianfrance. That film, The Place Beyond the Pines, is agritty, time-jumping drama that is so contrived that it feels like somethingBabel director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu would make if he were working on ascript by Paul Haggis (Crash). So between all the low-profile filmswaiting to be discovered, the star-powered vehicles launching their way to Oscar and thestinkers (I’m looking at you, Place Beyond the Pines), thereisn’t always much room for movies that get the testosterone pumping.
