After telling police he used the needle in his pocket to shoot steroids into his stomach, Michael Calash tried to dupe them with a fake name.
"Peter Buckhalter," said Calash, 31, spelling it out while pacing in the 400 block of Northwest Second Street in Delray Beach on Wednesday, "B-U-C-K-H-A-L-T-E-R."
Why Calash invoked Buckhalter's name isn't clear, although the two were once friends, according to Calash's ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old Lauren Maina.
But that friendship soured shortly after Calash began dating Maina and Buckhalter tried to bring a stripper back to the couple's home.
"We got into a fight about money he owed me and it blew up from there," said Maina, who broke up with Calash after his latest arrest. "Branden moved to New York and then Costa Rica – he's laying low."
Shortly after police arrested him for a past warrant and giving a false name, Calash became filled with rage, kicking and punching the door of cell block 5.
"You're a motherf----- and I'm going to come get you when I get out you piece of s--- f-----!" he yelled at an officer, who had just talked with Maina. "You're f------ done."
The couple broke up in light of Calash's arrest. Maina told police she wants to file a restraining order against her now ex.
"You didn't have to charge me with the needle, you p----!" he yelled. "When I get out I'm going to come after you. Do you know who I am? I'll have your job!"
At first, investigators didn't know who Calash was.
Around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Delray Beach Police Officer Luis Skeberis noticed a man pacing back and forth in the 400 block of Northwest Second Street.
The man, later identified as Calash, appeared to be talking to himself. But as Skeberis got closer, it was apparent that Calash was actually talking on a cell phone.
"Is everything OK?" Skeberis asked.
"Yeah, I'm just talking to my bank," Calash said.
Skeberis then asked if the man had anything illegal on him. The man began to shake and admitted he had a needle in his pocket.
He said he had just used the needle to shoot steroids into his stomach.
Arresting the man for the paraphernalia, Skeberis asked for the man's name.
"Branden," Calash said. Then, he changed his mind, claiming his name was "Peter Buckhalter."
A search of the Delray Beach Police Teletype system showed "Peter Buckhalter" was not a valid name.
The officer asked the man for his Social Security number and used it to find the Calash's real name.
"Man, I'm going to tell you the truth," Calash said. "I have a warrant." Calash was wanted for failing to appear in court on misdemeanor charges.
Although police weren't able to find Buckhalter's name, a Sun Sentinel search of YouTube yielded different results: a video posted by a real estate agent in Panama warning the public about Buckhalter.
The video, titled "Wanted: Peter Buckhalter," opens with a message: "We're looking for Peter Buckhalter."
The footage shows a picture of Buckhalter's passport followed by another message: "He owes us a lot of money so be careful, don't do business with him."
"Buckhalter rented an apartment from one of my clients and signed a one year lease," said Guillermo Garcia De Paredes, the real estate agent who created the video. "He left after one month without paying and even broke some furniture in the apartment."
