Religions for centuries have utilized fasting in some form or another as a way for the followers to show their dedication to their deity with a sacrifice. Today people have taken to fasting as part of a diet and nutrition plan to help them lose weight and/or to detoxify. If you plan on taking part in a fast to either shed a few pounds or to cleanse the body there are a few basics of fasting that need to be understood.

Fasting can be done in three basic forms: water fasting, juice fasting or dry fasting.

Water fasting means that you would only drink distilled or mineral water and could consume no food what so ever. Water fasting is used to lose weight and to detoxify the body of harmful toxins that are present in most people. Diet and nutrition experts recommend that before you start a prolonged water fast that you start a partial fast. This partial fast can be done by skipping one meal a day for a week and replacing that meal with lots of water. Over the course of the week your body and mind will begin to understand what will happen when the full fast starts. Once you are ready for the full fast your should start out with no more than a three day water fast.

Juice fasting is also another type of fast for people trying to enhance their diet and nutrition plan. Juice fasting is usually done to help people lose weight. The basics of a juice fast are the same as the water fast. Again, it is advised that you do a partial fast for a week by replacing a meal with a juice fast. You can drink any juices you want, but it is best to drink fresh squeezed to limit the sugars and keep the nutrient content at a maximum. Keeping your body healthy during this process will help you when you return to regular eating.

Dry fasting means that you will not drink or eat anything during the fast. Diet and nutrition experts say that this type of fast should not be done for health reasons. These types of fasts are usually reserved for people who are fasting for religious reasons.

Once you have started your fast there are a few basics of fasting that happen to everyone. When your body runs out of food to digest in order to produce energy it will search for other sources in the body to help produce the energy you need to stay alive. These sources include excess fats, carbohydrates and sugars. During the course of your life toxins get lodged into your excess fat cells and will stay hidden there until the body needs to use those fat cells to produce energy.

During a fast the body will use this excess fat to create energy which will release the toxins into your body. The kidney and liver will then process those toxins out of the body through urine and feces. During a fast you can expect to see some interesting things come out of your body as it cleanses itself.

You will also notice that even though you are not eating food you still have lots of energy. That is because your body spends lot of its energy breaking down food in the digestive process. Without food in the system the body can spend its time and energy breaking down the excess fat and cleansing the system.

It is advisable to consult a doctor to create a diet and nutrition plan before you embark on your fasting journey.
