Successful treatment of anabolic steroid-induced azoospermia with human chorionic gonadotropin and human menopausal gonadotropin.

OBJECTIVE: To document for the first time the successful treatment using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG) of anabolic steroid-induced azoospermia that was persistent despite 1 year of cessation from steroid use. DESIGN: Clinical case report. SETTINGS: Tertiary referral center for infertility. PATIENT(S): A married couple with primary subfertility secondary to azoospermia and male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The husband was a bodybuilder who admitted to have used the anabolic steroids testosterone cypionate, methandrostenolone, oxandrolone, testosterone propionate, oxymetholone, nandrolone decanoate, and methenolone enanthate. INTERVENTION(S): Twice-weekly injections of 10,000 IU of hCG (Profasi; Serono) and daily injections of 75 IU of hMG (Humegon; Organon) for 3 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Semen analyses, pregnancy. RESULT(S): Semen analyses returned to normal after 3 months of treatment. The couple conceived spontaneously 7 months later. CONCLUSION(S): Steroid-induced azoospermia that is persistent after cessation of steroid use can be treated successfully with hCG and hMG.

TweetInteresting read I like this study I have been on for so many years I was worried I would never be able to have kids! I wonder where to get HMG? I can get HCG, but HMG I have never heard of it!

Also I thought the use of that much HCG can actually damage and make the person at risk to never recover?

Tweet...and it can also cause gyno. My advice is to go to a fertility specialist and tell him your situation and mention the study you saw, maybe he can help you out.

I wonder where to get HMG?

Good question mate. I've never seen any source that carries it personally.

It's use is to imitate FSH and so restore fertility. We know HCG imitates LH, HMG is it's FSH counterpart. Not as usefull to us bbers, as we're mostly concerned with restoring natural test levels. However for someone planning on having kids, it would be usefull to get the boys back to full function quickly.

Personally I think the doses used in the study were a bit on the high side.

ITs true bro. I know a guy at my gym who has to now see a specialist because he used way to much HCG. He dosed it much to high and fucked himself up very bad. His doc said he may have damaged himself permenantly.

TweetSupposedly LH suppression occurs much faster and harder than test, so use sparingly. 10,000 IU twice a week is insane, I would have prefered a slower treatment.

TweetAgreed, too high a dose for me. The PDR suggests about half that for hypo-gonadal treatment. I think the real damaging result is possiblility of overstimulating the LH (?) receptors, which can be permanent.

yes I am going to print this article and save it for when I get off to see what they think! I certainly dont want kids now so for now I dont care but I am sure I will want them later in life when I can settle down!
