TweetOk guys so in one of the other guns threads we got to talking about biulding an AR. I have always known you can build one I have just never though of doing it becuase I dont know much about it. After putting some though into it i would like to build a 5.56 AR.
Until I can afford one of these bad boys
lol but thats besides the point. So where do i start? I know some of you guys have experiance buildng these and i know we have a lot of military guys in here so have experiance with parts and what not.

TweetI'm not a huge gun geek but if you tell me your budget, I can ask one of my buddies about it for you. He is a big gun geek and could probably give you some good info. My AR (SW M&P 15) is fairly simple. I have an eotech site, vtac sling, sop mod buttstock, and flip up iron sites. Not sure of the price but if you can afford it I would look into getting a lighter short-barrel. That's what I wish I would've done.
TweetI dont really have a budget. One of the biggest reasons I never bought an AR is becuase i can afford to shell out $1,500 at once. But i can afford to buy a peice here and there for a few hundred bucks. I think 16'' barrel is the shortest you can legally go if im not mistaken how big is your barrel?

Tweeti am a trained armor and i have no idea why they sent me to school to do it but during a break in one of my pipelines they sent me to one. anyway i am not one with a ton of patience and i have built a number of ar and different weapons as well as worked on some. i will tell you this, if you are building from the ground up buy your trigger system in tact or pay someone to put it together for you. i did maybe 20 for my certs and one for myself and i refuse to ever do it again. i hate springs and working in tight spaces with them.
here is what you should think about when looking for your best buying options: what use are you going to use this platform for? target shooting with a ton of rounds? shooting mid range to long distance/hunting? this should be able to give you an idea of what to look for as far as barrel lengths weights etc.... then as for the lower it is around the same. now for the furniture sights etc..... that's all in personal pref and applications as well. eotech and aimpoint are the two the pop in my head for good quality systems.
if you want to get silly with your bolt carrier group take a look at fail zero bolt systems. they never need to be lubed, very seldom do they malfunction and they have a lifetime warranty on them and their coating.
i can go on for days about this stuff but i am scatter brained as you can see and ramble off lol

TweetLol im in the same boat brother i wont be able to do the trigger system i dont have the patients for that. luckily my dad is in law enforcement and doesnt live to far from here i know we know some gun smiths and armoror's who can help me out. I want a lightweight shorter barreled system no longer than 18'' but I am thinking about staying at 16''. I will get a longer barreled rifle with a bigger round down the road for the long range stuff. I want something that will be reliable and a all around good rifle. Most of what it will be used for is target shooting. I am working on joining the military here soon so who knows what i will use it for in the future but for right now i want a lightweight badass rifle i can beat on with a ton of rounds down range. i would like to keep the overall cost of the rifle as low as posssible but i dont mind spending extra money on parts if they are worth the money
I will look into those bolt systems. I am a glock guy so i love low maintence and high reliablity.

Tweetdont tell anyone but i am a glock man myself. performance and reliability trumps everything to me.
let me get up with one of my boys who just built a basic ar for under a grand here a few months back and see where he picked up his recievers and stuff from

Tweetgood info guys. when i built mine i got bought a matched upper and lower from the same manufacturer. you should do research which barrel you want. chrome lined or chrome moly, heavy barrel? front sight or optics only? which bolt and carrier, make sure you have headspace gauges. what caliber. probably 5.56/.223 i would not build one that only shot .223.
a drop in trigger assembly is IMO the way to go in that respect. it is easy to install in your lower and you don't have to fiddle with little springs and such. a good trigger makes shooting even more fun.
this is one of those things honestly it is best to do hours of research on the web to find exactly what you want. there are so many choices to make it boggles the mind.
