TweetI DO MINE AFTER EACH TIME I SHOOT IT...MAYBE ITS OVERKILL BUT I LIKE CLEAN EQUIPMENT. I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO COME UP WITH AN EXCUSE IF SOMETHING DOESNT WORK BECAUSE OF AN UN-OILED, UNCLEAN GUN
TweetHow often do you field strip and clean your guns?
Is it after 'so many' rounds?
Is it after each plinking session?
???

TweetI just cleaned my 9mm last night and .45 the night before, after shooting them both on Friday. I clean all of my guns every time I shoot them. What I don't like cleaning is the damn clips.

TweetI usually clean after a day of shooting. I try to keep it to every 250rds or so. Which is a good shoot. I stopped cleaning my Ruger P95 for about 600rds.(several outiings). I was shooting other guns more on the last few outings. I just cleaned the Ruger after about 600rds or so, and it was actually as clean, or cleaner than the [every outing] cleaning I was giving it during the 1st 500rds or so. Clean ammo, or a clean shooting gun...I believe it's a clean shooter.
I went without cleaning it for a while to see how it kept functioning. I know 600rds isn't really giving it hell, but it's the most that i could keep myself from a thorough field strip.
I figure the high pressure of 9mm ammo blows the blast well out of the gun. maybe?..
My .32 sometimes leaves a few grains of powder on the follower and around the inside of the receiver area. What's odd, is it seems to do it with the 7rd mag that came in the gun rather than the 10rd optional mag. wtf?
And the thorough field-strip cleaning depends on the firearm with me also. For instance, I just wipe my AKM down most of the time. I've only field stripped it once. I would love to hear the rd count of some of those Kalash rifles 'cared' for by 3rd world country military. By the looks at some of the findings by our guys, it's gotta be phenominal.
TweetI try to each time afterwards..still trying to find the best cleaning method and best stuff to clean with.
Field stripped my PX4 Storm yest. and cleaned the rails with a toothbrush..was SUPER dirty..learned my lesson
TweetHoppes #9. best barrel cleaner and tough places.
Break Free CLP for the every cleaning.
Avoid Rem-oil for plastic frame. It breaks down polymer plastics.
TweetBreak Free CLP is great for rail lube as well. When it seems dry, CLP leaves a protective lubricant film.
All your cleaners can be found at Wal-Mart for a few bucks.
I keep a Hoppes cleaning cloth in my ammo box that comes shooting with me to wipe down before reholstering, packing up and riding to the house. Get rid of all that gun blast residue.
TweetCasey Gun Scrubber. Aerosoli caaan that allows you inbetween cleanings and quick touch up wothout disassembly. rack it open and apply to all the nooks and crannies.
Good stuff!!!
TweetAhh damn..thanks for the tip! I was using the rem-oil!!!
Oh and by the way.. HP any way to remove outside scratching on the metal?
TweetI'm sure it takes some time for Rem-oil to break down plastic. It says it on the big can of Rem-oil though. I don't know if the little can has that warning.
You're fine with that new piece. Just don't use anymore, and try to get it off all plastic parts.
The only thing I know about scratches on the metal. If it's blued metal. It can be buffed out and reblued by the gunsmith that knows that trade well. But scratches happen. They're good for making it 'your gun'. it has your scratches.character. part of it's life...journey.
TweetI clean after everytime I shoot- Hopps #9 and Rem-oil on all of mine
TweetWell said bro! ..haha wish you could come down to SE Texas to shoot sometime![]()
TweetI just bought some Hoppes #9 the other night at Wal-Mart for $3.00. I used it for the first cleaning on my XDM 9mm and it works very well. That is what I will use from now on. I also keep a cleaning cloth on hand to wipe down the barrel before putting it away and every time after handling it. I have always field stripped my guns after shooting for a thorough cleaning, and maybe I got that from shooting in the military, but from now on I am going to limit it to every 300-500 rds roughly. I also don't think it is necessary to clean my clips every time and may limit that too. At least, as long as there is not obvious residue on them and if I didn't shoot a whole lot. I usually only shoot about 100-150 rounds through each gun on an outing, and less than that with my .45 due to cost and difficulty finding ammo for it.

TweetI would love a good TX shoot-out.That would be a blast. I love shooting with folks.
