TweetObviously, I am going to say BJJ just because it would be a good defense art in real life for the smaller guys. I liked Muay Thai but that is more of a fighting style.

Tweetagree 100%.
you knew me and tn94z would definately reccomend BJJ or MT
i love them both.
karate and TKD are great i just dont want all the ritual and katas ect. just give me the combat
Tweetpersonally i would like to learn bjj but thats because that style interested me. if i was putting a kid in martial arts it would probably be regular old karate just to learn some skills and discipline.
TweetI totally agree..I do like the ritual and mental dsicipline aspects, but lets hurry up and get into AS REAL AS IT GETS!!
TweetSpeaking of karate, do you think it would be weird if I were to start it along with my step son? I am 32. I mean, I have trained in Muay Thai, BJJ, and boxing through my years and I think it would be cool to add this to my "resume" I have thought about it....but who knows.

TweetI agree. IMO, BJJ is a little too technical for many smaller kids unless they can just stay in the gym a lot. My step-son does not have the attention span to start BJJ. I have showed him some things and you would really be surprised at how much he picks up watching the fights, but he couldn't sit through a class....He likes the kicking and punching too much right now.

My wife and daughter are blackbelts in tkd. There are lots of ppl there who are 30-60 and just started.
They call you paranoid until the worst happens, and in the aftermath they will call you a hero.
Tweetit comes down to what works for you and your body structure. if you have short limbs, as much as i like bjj ur gonna have a hard time opposed to someone like kendal grove who has long supple limbs he can wrap around you. got heavy, not very flexible legs? stay away from kicking arts like tae kwon do. find what works for your body and your mind set. there are NO bad martial arts just bad teachers and arts not suited to your body type. for my body type, isshinryu, an okinawan style of karate and cross training in daito ryu aikijujutsu has been the ticket. if i had better and longer legs id add some tkd. if i was younger, faster and more fluid id add some wushu.
TweetMy wife and I have done Taekwondo for about 12 yrs, her much longer and I gotta say its prolly the best mix between offense and a defensive martial art. Many styles offer too much of 1 or the other. Like I did MT for about 2yrs and they really focus on offense but slim on the defense. BJJ I have trained in for about 3 yrs and it does offer good offense and defense, once your on the ground. TKD is where I would go...just sayin
