      Read this first:

This is why BCAA's are usless (biologically speaking)...

The pituitary is stimulated to release GH by another hormone circulating in the brain, called somatrocrinin. Levels of somacrinin can be incresed by increasing levels of brain neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that carry information from one nerve to another. Their activity constitues your mind, your conciouness, all your schemes and dreams. So before you mess with them you better know what you are doing.

To increase neurotransmitters, you have to get the amino acids that influence them past what is called the blood-brain barrier. That is a system designed to protect the brain. To cross the barrier, amino acids have to be carried by specific transport molecules. The transport capacity is very limited and once it is full, no more aminos get across for some time.

As I stated above, there are four different types of transporter. Each will carry only one specific class of amino acids. The four are Large Neutral, Small Neutral, Acidic and Basic.

Large Neutral: Trytophan, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Methionine, Hisidine, Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine
Small Neutral: Asparagine, Glutamine, Proline and Serine.
Acidic: Latamic Acid and Aspartic Acid.
      Basic: Arginine, Ornithine and Lysine.

As you can see if you want your aminos to work for you you have to take them alone. For instance a supplement of Trytophan, Glutamine, and Arginine would be a great combo. There is one unassigned amino Glycine that has been proven to release GH too, but it's much weaker. The strongest are Tryptophan, Glutimine, Arginine, Ornithine (in the form of ornithine alpha-ketogluterate) and Lysine.

This is from Optimum Sports Nutrition by Dr. Michael Colgan of the Colgan Institute. He's built his reputation and credibility by training some of the best Olympic Athletes in the world.

PS - If you eat enough meat everyday you will get enough aminos. Just balance it out and make sure you get at least 3 servings of fish a week, and try to get chicken and beef everyday.

So from what T-man's post is saying, would the assumption be that BCAA's are not effective?

Yep, that's what I'm saying. And it's not me, this is from a Dr who has built his entire reputation by training athletes and this is just how the body works. Taking aminos all at once will deffinately put more than one from each group in the blood stream at one time. This will cause them to cancel each other out and none of them will pass the blood brain barrier. There's several pages on it, I just typed up the jist of it. He goes into deep detail as to why. His suggestion for taking aminos is broken out throughout the day so they are in the blood at different times and many of them are taken in injection form because the manufactured oral form are not as good. However, there is no substitute for eating meat. Just get eggs, meat, chicken and seafood into your diet and you will get all you need.

Hey T-Man which supplement would you suggest when a person is leaning out and trying to prevent muscle wasting? I had read that BCAA's could be taken before cardio and workouts to prevent this while also helping with recovery.

Well, Gluamine is probably the best for recovery, or one of the best anyways. But, I don't know of any OTC supps that are going to totally prevent muscle loss when leaning out. Even the pro BBers with all the stuff they take are going to lose muscle when they cut down.

The only way I know to prevent muscle loss is to space out your cutting over a much longer time frame and shoot to lose about 1/2 pound a week. I got this from a natural BBer who used to do this for his shows. He would literaly start out like 6 months before the show and lose about 1/2 pound a week. That way, he was a lot more likely to lose just fat. Now, this was a long time ago but I've seen his videos and he used to get down to about 3-4%. He had the sickest striations of anyone on the stage and as the middle weight, he took 1st in his wieght class and the overall in both shows. When he went to nationals is where he couldn't compete with the guys who used. There were just too dense for him. But, he took the northwester title twice without ever using. Now this was back in the late 80's but even today he does the same things. I've known him for almost 6 years and I've seen his weight go from 235 down to 190. The 190 he was about 5-6% and looked sick. Not to mention, he's 43 years old too. But, when he started cutting down from the 235 he went about 1/2 per week and it took him over a year to get to where he is now. His discipline is out of this world. This guy can so 'no' to any food that will mess up his physic at any time. I don't know how he does it day in and day out but he does. Everything he eats is clean. His idea of splurging is sour cream or two bites of something sweet.

Basically, I guess what I'm getting at is that it's better to lose slower than faster to keep the most muscle possible. My buddy dropped a lot of weight and he still has most of his mass, he just has less of the fat so his over all physic looks smaller but the muscles themselves are much more prominant.

Sorry I went off on that tangent but I figured it would best help explain it. LOL

Thank you for the response bro. I just want to sort through all the bullshit and find out what really works when it comes to precontest dieting. I have been able to put on size these past two years and I don't want to mess up my hard earned gains by not taking the right kind of supplementation or by making too large of a jump in weight loss.
