yeah, I got this one when I was 14, so it's about to be 25yrs old. It had been left with the chamber open for yrs, collecting more dust and grime in the already dirty chamber, so it was bad. The barrel was dirty as hell. It had never been thoroughly cleaned, except for wipedowns. Now every gun in my possession is really clean.
Something that just doesn't seem right to me is my dad, the man that taught me more than anyone I've hunted with, or even been around, extremely strict gun etiquette. He doesn't keep his guns up very well. If you knew him, and his personality in general, it just doesn't fit. but, he just doesn't do much more than wipe them down after each use. Or maybe it's because he doesn't hunt anymore. May think the guns are fine so long as they aren't being used, idk.???
You outta get familiar with your guns. Go shooting. Take a good CCW class. I'm just amazed at all the ignorant folks that work at gun-shops and shows. This line gets me everytime. I'll keep getting muzzle swept by the dealer himself. I say something about it, and the gun handler "professional" replies, "oh, it's not loaded." <---that pisses me off. You treat a gun as if it's loaded always. No-one should ever see down the barrel of a gun your holding. Unloaded guns produce the most accidental shootings.
That's reallly the most important thing to know about guns. Always treat them as if they're loaded. Never put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to fire.

Learn your guns. Get aquainted with them, and go shooting...as often as you can. practice makes perfect. You never know when it could save your life in many ways. And reall, shooting, target shooting (plinking), is one of the most fun things to go do. If you live near the dessert, or some open land where people shoot. That's the best. If you gotta go to a range, you'll enjoy it too. Whatever the case, knowing your guns is a good thing. Being known for having, and knowing, guns is a good thing. There have ben so many terrible things that have happened to people in situations that a handy firearm would have saved the days. Most thugs don't know how to shoot. If "a badguy" grabbed a hostage and held her/him in front of him like a shield, I could hit the bad-guy between the eyes without hesitation from 21ft. With a sub-compact pistol. And it'd most likely be closer to half that distance. game over.
