i was wondering if all of the more knowledable members of this forum learned what they know from trial and error , boards , etc. or does anyone have a degree in a fitness related field , nutrition , etc.

it wasnt a stupid question. i know noone is just born knowing this kind of stuff. i was simply wondering how the obviously well versed members got that way. i think anyone who is on a board got here by researching something. i know there isnt a asu but its nice to know how everyone started.

When i was a newbie of course I ask many questions if needed, but did alot of research on my own to find the answers! Also, being on many different boards I learned a great deal from many great mods/vets/newbies(yes even some newbies)
I also worked in the pharmacy for around 2 1/2 yrs so some knowledge came from that field!

Hey bro...I wasn't implying that it was a stupid question, there is never a stupid question IMO.

I think you learn through whatever methods you choose to learn, but in some ways there is no substitute for experience/trial and error, but much of that is what works for you and maybe not so much Joe Otherguy. Through this experience though you could probably help others make adjustments, and thats where PT comes in, although there are of course many different certs out there for that.

I started working out about 15 years ago, and have been interested before that, my dads barber was a National level competitor as was his wife (not sure what she competed in, but she was big), a friend at my school when I was in first grade also had a really big dad, not sure what level he competed in (as if I'd remember, I didn't know him that well). Back then though sand weights were the only cheap ones, and when I convinced my dad to get me some when I was only 7 or 8, they were all busted up at the local Sears

From there in the late 80s I got a few mags now and then (Muscle and Advertising, etc), bought a couple books, tried the discusting soy proteins of the day, worked out at school, made plenty of routines up on your own, etc etc

Many roads to the same destination...
