TweetKurt Angle in negotiations with EliteXC and UFC
By MMAFighting.com on February 9, 2007
Kurt Angle, an Olympic Gold Medalist Wrestler in 1996, reiterated his intentions to compete in mixed martial arts during an appearance tonight on Scott Ferrall, a sports radio talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Angle told Ferrall that he is currently in negotiations with both EliteXC and UFC. Angle said UFC President Dana White initially did not want to sign him because of his involvement with pro wrestling. But upon hearing Angle was in negotiations with EliteXC, White changed his mind and decided to pursue Angle.
Angle stated he would like to fight three times before he turns forty years old.

TweetThey say a good wrestler will beat a great fighter anyday. So I'd like to see it.

Tweetyeah I'd be worried about all his injuries over the years...
TweetPut him against Shamrock!!! Did him Shamrock ever wrestle each other in the WWF?
TweetHe's a tough guy, but can he take a "real" punch to the face by someone like Chuck or Rich ?? He's got fundamental skills, but he could get ****ed up in a hurry if he doesnt know what hes doing.
Tweetnot really, a great wrestler can take sombody down but unless versed in submissions will end up in an armbar or triangle very quickly and if he cant take em down the great strikers will pick em apart.
in the HW division he will be destroyed
close to 40 is not a good time to start MMA after fake wrastlin for so long. also he has a really bad back and many nagging injuries
Tweetthis might be very interesting! dont under estimate him
If bigger is better then im better than ever !
TweetDid you miss the Lidell and Couture fight, the Lidell and Ortizor fight or the Lidell and Sobra (sp) fight? LOL All three of those guys are excellent graplers and Lidell rocked all of them.
The only way a grapler is better is if the striker has a weak takedown defense, that's it. But, if the striker is a great striker and has great takedown defense, that's a whole different story. I have a wrestling back ground and I agree with you, in most cases a grappler has the advantage because 'most' fights end up on the ground. Then, you have the other guys in that weight class with excellent submission skills which will be more than willing to go to the ground with Angle. Also, Angle has to weigh in the mid 200's, so he's in the Tim Silva class and Tim Silva has really good take down defense too. Angle would probably be able to blow through some low level fighters but the ones with striking and takedown defense are going to beat him. IMO
TweetTry taking a punch from Tank Abbott or Tim Silva, because that's his weight class.
Tweett-man i agree 100%. fake wrastlin where somone lets you pick them up and slaps you in the chest is different than where somone knees you in the jaw when you shoot and then punches you in the temple and when your on the ground grabs an arm and applys an armbar.
wrastlin is not fighting and a real wrestling background is solid fundamental groundwork for a real fighter but when a pure wrestler like josh koschek (when he was on the on the show) takes you down he is lost with how to finish a fight and ends up being submitted by elementary moves that a beggining BJJ student could identify and defend or just lays there unable to do anything
i hope he does try his luck at MMA in the UFC because andre arlovski, brandon vera (225#s) , jeff monson will own him like a pit bull on a poodle. now you take the top 2 HWs in the UFC cro cop and silvia it will be a kurk angle slaughter. and then if he was really froggy he could go with the baddest man on the planet Fedor Emelyanenko my God just thinking of the the guys shoveling out little bloody pieces of kurk makes me sick to my stomach
i can tell you from experience with real MMA guys, having a hole in your game will result in traumatic defeat.
