i've always heard you should be able to do your body weight if untrained. however, most men can't do much over 150-185 from what i've seen

One big factor is the length of the persons arms. A short guy at 223 should be able to bench more than a tall guy if they had equal amount of muscle. I am 6'4 250# and the most I've ever put up was 485 for 1 rep. But I have seen short stocky guys about the same strength as me put up more.

averaged out the goal is supposed to be 1.5 times your bodyweight, or 335 or so at 223 pounds bodyweight.
              dealift is 2 times bodyweight
              squat is 1.75

Re: WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMAL BENCH PRESS

I've noticed that most guys that haven't trained can workout with between 115-135 for 4 sets. Bench is a movement that doesn't get really worked out doing regular physical labor so even very strong natural guys usually don't have a strong bench until they start training.

Re: WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMAL BENCH PRESS

i think there's a lot of factors involved. his he tall or short? how long has he been training? if he has long arms, the range of motion is much more than that of a guy with shorter arms, thus the longer arms would (typically) have a weaker bench.

Re: WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMAL BENCH PRESS

I heard somewhere that everyone should be able to do there bodyweight. You are considered STRONG if you can do 100 over, and VERY STRONG if you can do double your weight.

Re: WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMAL BENCH PRESS

I don't believe there is any accurate way to determine someone's bench press who does not workout. Some people carry more fat than others and some carry more muscle. Also, some people have longer arms or shorter arms. However, if someone works out moderately and weighs 223 I would think they should be able to do their body weight for 1 rep but not if they don't work out, unless they are naturally stout.

Re: WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMAL BENCH PRESS

I wouldn't say bodyweight is a true goal for someone untrained to perform...never seen that like the posts above most men have a hard time doing 100-150lbs if untrained. I think a solidly fit individual (not a BB) should aim for bodyweight but it depends on other goals...I think a BB should be able to do his weight and an advanced BB should be able to get somewhere close to doubling his weight in a one rep max.

But its also how you train...I personally don't ever lift under a 3 rep bench anymore and I prefer higher reps with good form but still get close to double my weight...did 365 last monday (hung over too!) for 5 reps clean and I weigh 228.

But personally if a guy weighs around 220 and he can put 225 on a bar I give him respect.
