My 8 yr old just started his second season of tackle football and his coach said he is going to be on defense again. I am trying to figure out how these coaches figure out who is going to be what position. It happened last year also the coaches dont even try out the players at the positions they just come up with who plays what and thats how it is. I mean my son is on the 7-8 year old league and he is one of 5 of the 8 yr old players the rest are all 7 and are in their first year. So how do they get the positions like quarteback and running backs? in practice my boy runs faster than most and does the drills better than most ,yet gets put on defense. The offense is getting extra practice at the coaches house tommarow and we didnt get invited? Just curious?

      OFFENSE SUCKS!!!

      defense wins the game!

been a LB for years and spent most of my life as a DL until my last year of university football where they put me tackle WHAT AN INSULT!

well its a 7-8yo league to tell you the truth, there is a weigh limit too.
anyway, most of the players all look the same kinda like a clone football league.

Your son is probably stronger, meaner and this is two plus to put the kid on the def.

But I coach football since 4 years now, to 14-15 sometimes to 16-17.

And all players are evaluated to all positions, with the exemption of the 6 5 350lbs which will not do the rb or wr, or def backfield pos.

Even if your son is stronger, faster, better, and bigger and you seem pissed that he got posted at def. Well, to tell you the truth, there is a lot of reasons why they would post him there.

I have many of my LB that runs faster than my RB, but they wont be able to run the ball or read the holes or carry the balls properly, they have the killer instinct, but not the one that suited to score points.

but, he's only 8, so usually he should play both ways.

Yea you would think he would play both ways but they don’t do it like that for some reason? And I was just pissed because they are having extra practice for offense not defense. I am sure the offense consists of the coach’s kids and their friend’s kids and the rich kids.

I say complain to the coach, also why would he have an offense only practice at his house? Your son should be able to play in offence as well as defense

Agree with vandoo ( except hating the french, LOL, that's another thread, jk )

You son is probably more agressive and not afraid to hit.

50% of those kids in that age bracket are very unfamiliar with what to do and how to do it, and it is rare that you get a coach that can connect properly and teach 8 yr. olds, it's very hard and 8 year olds attention span is very limited.

Unless the coaches are complete a-holes, which is very doubtful, it's a very tough job. Maybe ask if they need some extra help if your gonna be around, almost guarantee they could use it, and then you'd find out for sure, and maybe....something will happen

      good luck

      actually,

between 6-13 and 17 to 20's something, they want to learn, at 8 usually they are a dream to coach. That what I was told, I alway refused to coach below the 14 yo as I am a former university player, kinda like wasting my time.

even myself, when I will have my kids playing football I wont coach them, as I will be a complete SOB, plus I dont want to reduce my level of coaching.

But best thing is asking the head coach the what's up, in a very friendly manner, and if you played before football, ask if they could use your help too. This often bring pressure to the other coaches to play the kid, except for me lol.

But teaching 8yo, is hard and "fun".
