  • what to do with myself

    I was wondering what you guys would think would be the best for some sort of hobbie for me. I was thinking about going to a boxing gym with one of my friends, we can get a membership for $50 a month and he knows the guy that owns the gym so he said he would help train us. I want to learn how to fight better than I do now and also get some cardio out of it, so my friend suggested boxing. I want to be able to defend myself and maybe someday be a personal bodyguard or something like that. Would you guys say boxing would be good or should I try some kind of martial arts? If so what would you guys recommend? I am 22 and was thinking starting with boxing, then going to something else, but not sure. I already know how to street fight fairly well from getting in fight when I was in school and all but want to be better and more disciplined. I need something besides girls to take up my time. I want to be really good at something, everyone I think should have something they are really good at. So suggestions would be great. -crombie09

    Boxing is good. So is jujitsu. Almost ant martial art is good for disipline. I took shotokan karate for 8 years. Really helped me with disipline and control. Mt sensai was a bastard though and used to hit me with bamboo sticks a lot.

      i have been kick boxing for many years now it is exellent cardio to beat on a bag for 30 minutes or do some heavy sparring. boxing is good too but you dont get the leg work without kicking. you cant go wrong training for any fighting sport. i want to learn BJJ. i just dont have enough time.

            I dont know if my stature matters but I'm 6 foot 3 and around 215 lbs right now. It matters for certian types of fighting right? More suggestions would be awesome thanks. Oh and I'm a southpaw. -crombie09

                    im lookin to start gracie jui jitsu took boxing when i was younger but plent yof street fights helped too

                      Trained under Carlson gracie for 2 years. Also met with Rickson and Royler at a seminar. BBJ is a great sport, the most practical fighting style there is and best defensive style. I also did Combat SUbmission Wrestling under Erik Paulson ( Light heavy weight shoot fighting champion). Similar style of moves as BBJ, but focuses more on offense.

                      Note there is a huge difference between Jiu Jitsu and Gracie jui jitsu.

                            To learn better stand up skills look into Muay Thai Boxing, for grapling, or ground fighting look into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

                            Muay Thai covers a lot more aspects of a fight then american boxing and involves some much more effective tech. IMO. (elbows/kness/etc.)

                            Then think... how many street fights do you see two guys or sometime more stand there and box toe to toe. They almost always end up on the ground or with someone shooting in on you. Muay Thai can help with people shooting in on you some, but BJJ shines in this area. BJJ is very critical in a ground fight IMO and if you even know just a little bit, you can make things end very quickly against someone without the knowledge. In the situations I have been around, the guys who tend to know things also tend not to start things. Not all, but most from what I see. So, to me odds are, is someone starts harrasing you and so on, you'll probably be in good shape to defend yourself.

                            After all that is said.....most important thing.... use your head and not your ego.

                              I enjoy shootfighting more then BBJ personally as it focuses on the strikes more. Being very strong for my weight, I like to use the old ground N pound method, which is also very hard to pull off when you have a 10lb Gi on.
