Working overseas??

TweetI have been toying with this idea for a few years now and due to my recent move back into an industry I know very, very well, the opportunites have been presenting themselves.

I just talked to a former customer and friend who is in charge of all international sales for his company. He asked what I was up to and blah, blah, blah we talked about international/overseas work. Well I have meeting set up with him Monday evening for dinner and drinks to discuss some opportunities.

Additionally, I was just contacted by a potential customer who is in need of equipment my company builds and we got to talking and they are looking for help overseas as well. There are a number of countries they could place someone.

And there is also a strong possibility for work at a competing company with locations in Brazil, Singapore, Shanghai, Taiwan, Mexico, etc, etc.

Just looking to get some feedback and information from anyone who has worked internationally for a period of time and just general opinions as well.

TweetI have done a lot of work overseas, primarily as a contractor for the Air Force, and prior as active duty Air Force. I was stationed in South Korea for 1 yr, Iraq 4 times, Afghanistan once, and short trips to Japan, Germany, England, Qatar, and several others. Of the countries you mentioned, Singapore would be my choice. I have not been there, however my ex-girlfriend worked there for a few yrs and loved it. I have not heard anything bad about it from anyone. Taiwan and Brazil would be cool but not sure how safe, especially Taiwan. Make sure you look into the area you would be working. Most likey it would be in the city where there are many americans and a very diverse culture. Also, the language barrier may be an issue. I have found that in the Asian countries people tend to not speak english, even if they know how to, it seems many are rude and simply do not wish to communicate with americans. Yet, if you are there working for a company you will meet many others in your situation I'm sure. Mexico is nice depending on the area, but dangerous nonetheless. My girlfriend is from Veracuz, Mexico. She tells me it is nice and so is Mexico City. I have been to Mexico city a few times but only for layovers.

I've spent a good deal of time in Mexico.
Vera Cruz, Orizaba, Tuluca, Mexico City, etc, etc.
I REALLY LOVE the people in Mexico and take every trip my company gets there. It's a different way of doing business when you're there.

The other places would definitely take some investigation.
I would tend to agree with the notion of language barrier, even when in Mexico with people who really try to communicate it's difficult, I can't imagine trying to get through to someone who doesn't even want to!

The other areas would be very dependent on which part they are in and what type of lifestyle could be had.

Actually the people were quite nice to me, altho i was in the military when i was there. It's buttass cold in the winter, and i do mean cold brother. But if i was a civilian i prob wouldn't mind working there as long as it wasn't for too long. Just not a ton of stuff to enjoy there i guess, very smart people as well.

I loved it in Korea personally. I went to Seoul about every other weekend and was stationed in Osan. It does get cold as heck in the winter and humid in the summer but I still enjoyed it. As a civilian I think it would be great. But who knows, it is another one of those love it or hate it places. I know retired military guys that have spent 15 and 20 yrs over there.
