      I'm a 41 yr old male, 5'-10".
I was 197lb before starting on the Atkins diet in Jan. Today I'm 180lb. I started dieting with my wife, who wants to lose about 10-15lbs. I've lost enough weight but want to add muscle. I really want to go for the 6-pack stomach. I look to small at this weight. I also need to shed a little more "gut" and add size to my arms and chest. Give me SUGGESTIONS.

Diet consist of high protien, low carbs. Training every-other day, hi reps low weight. 200 sit-ups a night.

I also stay active playing basketball and softball.

you could try some creatine...it could help you gain 5 lbs or so...as for bringing in the six pack, otc fat burners such as Xenadrine or Hydroxycut would help...but trying to 'bulk' a little while cutting isn't the best idea in my opinion...it's just really difficult to do both at the same time...so i'd suggest trying to bulk a bit by lowering reps and training a little heavier for size, increasing carbs atleast some, and giving creatine a try until you attain the size you want...then i'd go right into a a cutting phase using one of the aforementioned fat burners

I work with diet clients all the time and although I think there is some good points about Atkins, keeping your carbs too low, especially if you are very active, can hinder your progress. You don't sound like you are by no means excessively overweight. You need carbs to produce glycogen, which is what is needed to fuel your workouts and to continue to BURN FAT!!! That is why you should only stay extremely low for only about 2 weeks. What happens is that your body runs out of glycogen and you stop burning fat. Glycogen is essential for burning fat. And the only way to get glycogen is from eating carbs. Also, you cannot build muscle with protein alone. You need a healthy dose of about 40 to 60 grams along with your protein source post workout or you simply will not make muscle gains!! I surprised you even have the energy to do that much activity with your carbs as low as they are!! I think its a good diet regime for someone who is very overweight and wants to lose weight, because in this country, we live on processed carbohydrates and their is an alarming rate of obesity. For someone like you who justs wants to lose a little more on the gut and build muscle, you need to balance your protein with good sources of fibrous and whole grain carbs from things like vegetables, oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatos, berries, etc. Just stay away from processed foods that redily turn to sugar in your body and have them in moderation, like on weekends. Also try to avoid eating too many carbs too late into the evening. I hope this helps!! Good luck!!

I would also recommend that you try to do more weight training and less cardio. Too much cardio actually tears down muscle and lowers your metabolism. The more muscle you can add to your body the more fat you will burn all day, even when you sleep. That is because muscle is our bodies metabolically active tissue. But at the same time, muscle takes a shitload of calories to maintain. So, if you add more muscle, you need to keep increasing your calorie intake ( even carb calories). If you are looking to build more muscle, you need to lower those reps and lift heavier weights. Unless you are genetically gifted, which only a small percentage of people are, it can be very difficult to make lasting muscle gains. Again, good luck!!!
