TweetFrom AST website (Read it and it will become clear why employers would not test for gear)
Testing for banned substances is an expensive business. Many factors enter into the high cost, including: buying, maintaining and using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems; using expensive, high quality reagents; and careful, meticulous, reliable lab work by highly trained personnel.
With the addition of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and Isotope Ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) the costs are much higher. HRMS machines can be used to test for any drug but cost about $350,000 up front to purchase. This does not take into account materials, reagents, maintenance and the training of staff to utilize the equipment proficiently. IRMS machines are cheaper (only about $150,000 each) but they can only be used for testosterone/epitestosterone analyses.
We’re entering an exciting time in this field with the introduction of some highly sensitive liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) equipment using time of flight and laser desorption mass spectroscopy. These are currently being used to detect several natural polypeptide drugs. However, at over $250,000 each for the initial purchase, this technology is being introduced sparingly.
Even with this equipment and large volume testing contracts, in 1999 a fee of $100 per (single) anabolic steroid analysis was the norm. If you stop and think for a moment how many anabolic compounds there are to analyze, and take into account the frequency of testing required per athlete, then you start to comprehend the sort of money involved in a comprehensive drug testing program.
