TweetSo do you really need 4gigs of ram to keep from getting aggerivated with Vista? or will 3G do just as well?..or even 2gig, for that matter?
What do you have? brand, RAM, operating system??? and how do you like it?

Tweetreally!? that's nice to hear. I had to go by Office Depot the other day, so I was checking their's out. The guy told me that I wouldn't tell a difference between the 2g & 4g for my usage. And he seemed like the real computer knowledgeable type.
I had the "cool dude" at Best Buy tell me that I would definitely tell a difference, but he just went by the more RAM the faster rule that so many go by. Which it is, if you're using all the memory you have up at once. Which the average user doesn't, as the Office Depot guy said. He said that if I'm "gaming", while I'm drawing in Cad, running an Arc editor, and making a motion picture, then I would notice the difference. So, that saves a few hundred bones.
Tweetvista will take 1gig all by itself so with that said if you get a 2gig you basically only have 1 gig at your disposal. the minimum i would go is 3gig.

TweetI found a website that sells laptops, and they have a huge selection of brand new computers with XP. There's no price difference unless you step the hard-drive and RAM way down. I don't want to end up with some hack job though.
If Vista turns out to be that bad of a pain in the ass, I would just ditch it and run XP. voila...solved.
TweetWindows 7 is coming out so don't buy anything with Vista on it. Get a system with XP. The ram you do notice the difference if you are running multiple apps at the same time. ANyways more ram doesn't hurt if the price is less than $100 difference.
Tweetit's twice the price for twice the ram.
If I were to get XP, I wouldn't get over 2G. I have 1G on my desktop, and I haven't used a computer faster than this 4yr old Dell. no, it just turned 5yrs old! When I ordered it, I had Dell tweak this and that on the premise that I wouldn't sit down at a faster computer within the 4yrs of the warrantee. And it is still just as fast as new. It did have the hard-drive replaced just before the warrantee ran out. I wipe it clean of all the bs programs that are loaded from the factory, and load just the drivers that are used, so that always helps right at the beginning. I try to remember to do that once a year.
TweetAnother footnote - only the 64-bit version of Vista will recognize more than 3G of RAM. The 32-bit version will only recognize up to 3G.
TweetYou're right, you don't need more than 2GB ram for XP. Since the new Win OS is coming out, I wouldn't spend money on getting a Vista system. How computer literate are you? If you are pretty computer savy I'd switch to a Linux distro like Kubuntu. My laptop is dual boot with either XP or Kubuntu. Kubuntu is a great OS. The only bad thing is that the sound drivers are not compatible with Acer laptops. So I can't get any sound.
