Processes like hypothalamusí sensitivity towards hormonal influences, metabolism, and regulation of melatonin are related to this polypeptide. Besides these activities, epithalamin also activates telomere terminal transferase enzymes, also known as Telomerase.
This enzyme renews and stimulates telomeres, which are the small elements in our DNA being responsible for protection during cell division.
Once humans go beyond sexual maturity, telomeres lose their invulnerability and start suffering important damage with every single division. This leads to aging symptoms we all know and cancer.
