Washer and dryer talk....
Well, our washer is on it's last leg. They are both around 8 years old. I bought them when I first built the house. They had fallen off the delivery truck and have big dents in both of them so I got them really cheap. Well, we had been discussing getting a new set. Now it looks like it will need to happen sooner than later.
I have been doing some research and reading about all of the benefits of the front load washers and driers, etc.....It seems they have really gotten a lot more efficient over the years. But WOOOWWWW have they gotten pricey!!! I understand that they are higher because of the new requirements and all of the efficiency, but wow. But that is neither here nor there.
So what brands have you guys found to be the best? I figure that there are only a couple of companies that make the parts for pretty much everyone and that they just sell the others under different names.
Do I just basically pick whatever price and features we want and not worry about the name?
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
Maytag has been a good one!
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
I think that is what we have now...I'm not sure though. If so, then I agree. There used to be a Maytag factory here in our city that made the washers and stuff and it went out of business. I had a buddy that worked there and I got stuff super cheap. But I don't have that "hookup" any more.
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
So how long are washer/dryers supposed to last? I have had mine for 15 years and theyre still working but maybe its time to get new ones. How much are those things costing nowadays?
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
I just got new ones for about 4 something for the dryer and 6 something for the washer. They're the new computerized joints.

From what I have read, 8-12 years. It really depends on what you get. If you go with front load stuff (what my wife wants and supposed to be more efficient) anywhere from 800-1300 each.

Are those front load?
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
I went cheap on my washer and dryer 4 years ago when I moved and got frigidaire. Generally I would buy or recommend their products as they seem to be the most problematic brand. I had to buy all appliances for the house and the nice stainless Whirlpool set blew the budget. I picked up my set for about $1K, they are the HE frontloaders. Overall it works well but the washer has a tendency to have mildew/smell problems.
One thing I have heard is the new cheapo top load washers don't work well at cleaning compared to previous models. The reduced water consumption seems to reduce performance, unless you get a decent quality machine. Just like most other electronics quality/reliability is hit or miss, regardless of price.
In general, Matag and whirlpool are top brands. LG, Samsung and nice and fancy, but not more reliable. GE is usually garbage, even the profile series.

Typo: meant to say generally would not recommend frigidaire.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking because it seems like they want to just do away with the top loaders altogether. We are for sure getting front load. I guess I will just spend the money. I didn't want to, but over the life of the set, the efficiency will probably pay off. I looked at mine last night and they are Maytag. They have really been a good set considering they were damaged when I bought them. I will probably go with Maytag or LG.
Thanks for the replies

Ok, I looked and the ones that I have are Sears Roebuck. 15 years old and still going strong. They look like they were probably the cheapest models made by Sears. Very basic. Never had a single problem. Knock on wood. If the washer starts smelling funky, I run a bunch of bleech thru it and it seems to clean it up.
Re: Washer and dryer talk....
I just bought a new washer about 2-3 months back, I went with the top of the line Electrolux Front Load Wave Touch with the Perfect Steam, and I LOVE IT~!! I will be getting the dryer to match here very soon~!! It replaced my Maytag Neptune washer.
Stay Strong~~!!!

Maytag Neptunes are what we currently have and they were good but playing out now. We like the Electrolux stuff but my wife wants red and didn't see that color in their brand. We are definitely getting the steam though!
