The majority of my workouts are after 6:00 PM. I have two small packets of instant oatmeal about 30-45 minutes prior to workout.

when i used to work out in the am (0500) I would always have a quick shake before I hit the gym.

No matter what time i try to carb load before i workout...either oatmeal, protein bar, toast with my breakfast.....or brown rice with my lunch.

NEVER have been a fan of eating pre-workout. If your a hard gainer, by all means... If you are TOTALLY carb depleted and it will effect your workout yes, otherwise I say NO and use the extra calories post workout to promote an insulin response with simple carbs and drive those aminos into the worked muscles.

The other guys have good points, but from my personal experience, it's better to not have anything, unless you are a hard gainer.
Especially if you're trying to trim down....let that carb depletion allow your body to tap into fat stores for energy.
The guy at the gym was, as you mentioned, very ripped. That might be applicable for him, but you might need to do some trial and error for yourself.

cont'd...forgot to mention that I also get some indegestion when I eat before workout. Don't really know why some get it and some don't, but it definitely happens.
