Great question. I'd love to know more about this too
without getting blood drawn and checking if you are def i would have no clue. i have always used 400mg a day when i am sweating more than usual and 200 the rest of the year. like now i am doing a ton of cardio so it's 400 post workout for me
What kinda of magnesium your taking is probable what to look at first. Certain forms of magnesium are not absorbed so easily. Also avoid zinc when taking magnesium. It will cause your body to absorb less.
Calcium and vit D will aid in absorption of magnesium
Like Guns, I too take 400 mg ED. Never a prob with the runs as long as I take it with food. Now pop one on an empty stomach and you are playing with brown fire.
I take magnesium glycinate. One of the most absobing and least likely to cause digestive upset. here is a chart...RDA. Of course tweak to your own needs...

Anytime i use to do the competitions at work. I would use the 10 oz. magnesium citrate at the beginning after weigh in to clean me out. And then at the end of the competition 24-36hrs before weigh in. I could lose 9lbs the last day alone.. :)
