tephen Curry will set an NBA record by making $34.7 million for the 2017-18 season, but that doesn't mean he'll get to deposit anything close to that amount into his bank account.Curry, a two-time MVP for the Golden State Warriors, made history when he inked a five-year, $201 million contract over the summer, briefly setting the mark for the biggest contract in league history. While that figure was eclipsed by James Harden's $228 million extension with the Houston Rockets in July, Curry will still enjoy the highest single-season salary ever, topping LeBron James by more than $1 million dollars.
But as lucrative as it is to be an NBA player, it's also an expensive profession. Thanks to a variety of factors, Curry will pocket less than half of his salary for 2017-18.
ESPN's Darren Rovell provides a breakdown:


$16 million to various levels of government is a staggering sum, but the state of California places notably heavy taxes on money earned from professional sports. Texas, for example, has no state income tax, so players like Harden don't have to give up as much in salary.
Curry has become one of the NBA's most marketable players, so no one's going to shed any tears over his earning power — Forbes estimates him having made $35 million in endorsements alone over the past year. But Rovell's graphic shows just how quickly expenses can add up when dealing with millions upon millions of dollars.
Ultimately, Curry's is a good problem to have, especially given the fact that he made just $44 million in salary over the past four seasons, an incredible bargain by NBA standards. But no matter how much he rakes in, the Davidson product seems to have a healthy perspective on his finances.
"One thing my pops always told me is you never count another man's money," Curry said in June, according to Tim Kawakami of The Mercury News. "It's what you've got and how you take care of it. And if I'm complaining about $44 million over four years, then I've got other issues in my life."
Curry and the Warriors are set to kick off the 2017-18 season on October 17, when they'll host Harden and the Rockets in Oracle Arena.

it is supply and demand. I say if you can earn that much then dammit good for you! If I could I would. I am just terrible at basketball.

I'd like to see some of those fed and state taxes go directly to schools and further education. The govt has enough for crap sake.

It boggles my mind how much these guys make. I mean, good for them... but I think about all the crazy stress and sacrifice that so many people go through like our first responders, military, etc.. Then these guys getting paid millions because they can throw a ball through a net. Certainly not trying to knock the talent they have and everything that goes with it, but seriously they are throwing a ball through a net. :blink:

You ha e to look at it this way. The owners of these teams make an enormous amount of money off of these guys so it’s all relative. If the team can afford to pay them these salaries then so be it.

Agree totally. BUT: it's our fault. Well, not me specifically, because I don't watch basketball. Or football. I do watch hockey, so I'm guilty of that part of this. My point is, the solitary reason these guys get paid what they do is because of TV. It's entertainment. We watch the games on TV; we see the advertisements; we buy the products advertised. The money comes from advertisement spots, basically. I'm sure I've way oversimplified this, but that's the jist of it.

A gew years back, when the NFL started its season late, I remember hearing how much money was NOT being spent as a result, and it was absolutely staggering. I disremember what the dollar figure was, but it was equivalent to a small nation's GDP. All because there was no football to watch. Crazy.

Like I said, I'm a hockey fan, so I'm guilty, too. NHL players make far less than NBA of NFL or baseball players, but still plenty. If any of those guys play their cards right, they'll never "need" to work after retiring from their respective sport.

I was haopy to see this NBA dude we're talking about here say if he's complaining about 44 million in 4 years, he has other issues in his life. Sounds like he has some perspective regarding how fortunate he is.

Its amazing to see these athletes complain about 40 50 million dollars and how its not enough,somethingshould be changed but its to late its only going to get worse
