Cramps - what's the secret to prevent?
So now that I'm running more and leaning out some I have been getting wicked cramps. Mostly in my calves.
I drink over a gallon of water daily and have been taking a shot of Braggs apple cider vinegar before bed.
Last night I add one pill of each - potassium and magnesium. I hope this helps.
What is your magic cure for cramps?

if you get a sharp cramp in your calf when you run it may be because it is not stretched out enough. Also if you are new to running the repetative use of the calf will wear it out quick and it decides to quit on you.
magnesium citrate is the best form of mag IMO very bioavailable. start with 250 mg morning and night and work up to 500 mg each. if you can handle that dose (most can easily) it will help.
potassium is important but is common in many foods and most people are not deficient like mag.
stretch calves good, warm them up before running, compression sleeves help some although I hate em, start out slow and at the first hint of a cramp walk, do not try to push through. that is a good way to hurt yourself.

Magnesium has diuretic properties. This can contribute to cramping.
Drink half your bidy weight in oz if water daily. You will need more if your exercising and running! 1.5 gallons probable .
Potassium and 3 to 5gr of taurine will help Taurine.

check into the types of magnesium. there are several kinds and they have different benefits. Not all will have that laxative effect.
Re: Cramps - what's the secret to prevent?
dont forget to much or too little sodium as well. jipped covered the majority of fixing the situation. i would also add that a gal of water is a little light for someone that is really active. that and tossing in some taurine would help also
Re: Cramps - what's the secret to prevent?
Thanks everyone.
I'm going to add another 1/2 gallon of water a day.
Add the taurine.
I'm not new to running. I've ran several 1/2 marathons and a full marathon. But I am doing HIIT which I have not done in the past.
I will make sure to stretch more.
I will verify the type of magnesium I picked up.

Pickle Juice! LOL...Just kidding..remember when pickle juice was all the rage for cramps? Football players were drinking it on the sidelines. I think pickle juice was finally proven to be bunk for cramps.
