Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
I mean that you know you have it but have done nothing about it? Qhat side effects do you experience from this?
Re: Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
In cpap therapy for it about 6 years now but before that I'd nod off at red lights, feel completely exhausted even after sleeping 14 hours on the weekend. Even now if I fall asleep without using cpap I feel big difference in energy level next day.
Re: Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
but I want to know if anyone knows they have it but they chose to do nothing about it, and if so, why not?
Re: Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
Many can't wear the CPAP /BPAP due to claustrophobia and have anatomies not responsive to uvuloplasty ( the latter many times fail after a few years anyway and the person has to go back on CPAP). It is a public health hazard. Untreated sleep apnea folks are as likely to get into car accidents as drunk drivers. When I do my DOT physical, if their neck circumference is above a threshold circumference I cannot clear them for driving a truck without a sleep study. ( these are the new guidelines). Second, untreated sleep apnea induces higher CRP, inflammatory mediators, high levels of chronic stress hormones ( rermember, unlike acute , chronic hormones are more corticosteroids), secondary polycythemia etc. which all contribute to poor health outcomes. FOlks also have higher rates of congestive heart failure, strokes and chronic leg swelling etc.
Re: Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
I think some people do not realize how very dangherous this can be when untreated. It is NOT just about snoring

How about waking up from a sleep with panic and profuse sweating?
Re: Anyone have untreated sleep apnea?
I just got my DOT physical and examining person said new guidelines are about to be put in place regarding sleep studies. If your bmi is over 30 you will be required to get a sleep study and if it's found you have apnea you will be required to do as I do, wear your cpap minimum of 4 hours per night for the 70% compliance rate for DOT regs. Didn't know about the neck measure thing. She said untreated apnea puts you at a 5x higher chance of accidents.
