Have to start driving personal vehicle to work....opinions?
Well, we have been told at work that we have to start parking our work vans at our onsite location by the end of next week. This means I will have a 60 mile a day trip in my Z71 which doesn't get great gas mileage. I'm thinking it will be better in the long run to just buy me a daily driver that gets good gas mileage and just leave the truck parked at home during the week.
Or should I just get rid of the truck and get something a little nicer than 4k? Suggestions on a car or know of any?

honda accord or civic man, gives great gas mileage maintaince is reasonable and resale value is pretty good if you keep it in good condition ,my work truck is a 98 nissian fronteir ,stick, cant beat that on saving gas

That's actually what I have been looking for, civic or accord. The problem I am seeing is they are all over priced unless you want junk. I think this is because of the cash for clunkers crap that took out all of the cheap gas getters.
What does your Nissan truck get for mpg? I have read that the little trucks aren't all that great on gas. Most I have looked at get 24 max.

I guess you could figure it all out with a calculator, how many miles per gallon, cost of a gallon, how much in gas you would spend in a year, then figure in the cost of a second car and gas mileage and cost of driving it to work, insurance on second car, etc.. Would you save $$ or end upaying out more In the long run, you might end up doing better to just drive your truck and bite the bullet on the gas

True. I know it's going to cost me about 160.00 every four days to fill up my truck. I have a Z71 crew cab that gets about 17mpg. I have figured up it will take about 29.xx gallons per 5 days of driving to work only. So you are looking at about 640 per month in gas roughly (7680 in gas per year). I'll do some figuring here and see how it comes out....
Re: Have to start driving personal vehicle to work....opinions?
Completely disregard that last post.....my number were off...haha!! 80.00 every four days. That first mistype screwed up the rest of the post....haha!! I'm a dumbass
Re: Have to start driving personal vehicle to work....opinions?
But that's not bad off come to think of it. I'll still have to fill up twice a week pretty much once you consider my driving other than work. So the yearly number is still 7500+.
Re: Have to start driving personal vehicle to work....opinions?
FORD FOCUS.... DONT PAY THE IMPORT $ AND STILL GET 32 TO 35 MPG....IF NOT MORE. THE THINGS USED ARE ABOUT 50% THE PRICE FOR A COMP HONDA OR TOYOTA....LOOK UP THE RATINGS ON THEM...
KBB.COM
AUTOTRADER.COM
EDMOUNDS
CAR AND DRIVER
SO ON, AND SO ON, AND SO ON........
ON THE PLUS SIDE, FOR YOU FORIEGN DRIVERS...PRICES ON THOSE ARE DROPING LIKE A ROCK USED. DOMESTIC COMPETITION IS PUSHING THE WHOLESALE VALUE INTO THE DIRT...PRETTY SOON YOU CAN BUY THEM FOR FOCUS MONEY!!! OFCOURSE.....IT STILL WONT BE A FOCUS.....BUT YOU CAN PRETEND!!!

You know, I just assumed it would cheaper. But I have been running some numbers this morning (should have already done this I guess) and with the figures I am coming up with, I see it actually costing more money to buy a second vehicle to drive to work over the course of a year....unless I missed something.
I am getting that it will cost about 7500 per year in gas for my truck alone. Once I add a second vehicle costs (gas and insurance) and take away the weekly gas from the truck, it ends up being about 10k+ for both vehicles (figuring on a 30mpg second vehicle). I just assumed it would be cheaper but I'm thinking it may end up that I just need to bite the bullet and drive the truck. Either that or get rid of it completely in favor of a gas getter.

ALSO, THE WEAR AND TEAR ON YOUR TRUCK....FIGURIONG THE WHOLE "SECOND CAR" THING IS TUFF BECAUSE OF THE VERIABLES THAT CANT BE MESSURED...YOUR TRUCK TIRES ARE 3 OR 4 X'S THE COST OF PASSENGER CAR TIRES. OIL CHANGES COST MORE ON THOSE TRUCKS (MOST FILTERS ARE MORE AND MOST TAKE 6QUARTS OF OIL, TO 5 QUARTS ON THE LITTE CAR).... IN SOME STATES, YOU CAN PUT STORAGE INSURANCE ON THE TRYUCK AND STILL DRIVE IT ON THE WEEKENDS..... TUNE UPS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE ON THE TRUCK. MILEAGE EFFECTS THE WHOLESALE VALUES ON TRUCKS WORSE IN THIS AREA.... THERE'S SO MANY THINGS YOU CAN GET STUPID ABOUT IT QUICK..... SO ITS NOT JUST GAS MILEAGE

Right, but I just couldn't figure that stuff in really. But you are still maintaining two vehicles instead of one.
So your opinion is a second vehicle would more than likely be better in the long run?
Re: Have to start driving personal vehicle to work....opinions?
agree with david they are good cars that can be had cheap. i kept my truck for a while after getting my car and never drove it. still had insurance on it and it was not worth it.

So did you get rid of the truck or did you get rid of the car? I'm thinking I will stick it out at least until my wife is ready for a new car. Then I'll just drive her altima instead.
